Position Overview

The Office of the Registrar is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Marketing and Communications Manager

Reporting to the University Registrar, the Manager, Marketing and Communications will lead a small team of communications professionals dedicated to advancing the University of Calgary\'s enrolment and student service goals. This team will support all aspects of the student lifecycle from application to convocation - through strategic communications that engage key audiences including students, applicants, prospective students, staff and alumni.This leadership position has a high volume of work with some early morning, evenings and weekend hours required, conflicting priorities and moderate to high levels of pressure/stress. Decisions and/or recommendations made have a significant impact on the long-term reputation of the University of Calgary and could help or hinder the university in achieving its student recruitment, enrolment and funding goals.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Leadership

  • Accountable for the productivity and impact of a team of direct reports.
  • Responsible for directing and supervising personal and team time effectively to ensure communications, project. implementation, and reports are completed on a timely basis and at expected levels of quality.
  • Direct the performance management and retention of all direct reports.
  • Lead and initiate process improvements to promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement, and act as an ambassador of change management.
  • Proactively cultivate and maintain productive, accountable and problem-solving working relationships with colleagues within the Office of the Registrar and the wider University of Calgary team.
  • Consistently achieve positive results through effective teamwork, collaboration, best practices and tracking of key performance indicators.
  • Work through complex issues and challenging interpersonal interactions with composure and diplomacy.
  • Responsible for all succession planning and operations planning to ensure business continuity within their communications team at all times, including during periods of intense pressure with evolving issues management.
Client Management
  • Effectively translate client business goals and preferences into strategic marketing, communications plans and tactics that support the needs of students, prospective students and alumni. Delegate and oversee the team in completing and deploying these plans and tactics.
  • Present marketing and communications strategies to clients to inform and guide senior leadership.
  • Diplomatically resolve any tension between client needs and communications staff to ensure effective tactics that meet the needs and desires of clients.
  • Effectively set client expectations concerning best practices, timelines and communications resources available.
  • Effectively provide metrics to clients on outcomes of activities on behalf of team to demonstrate value of communications provided to achieve client goals.
Communications and Marketing
  • Work closely with clients to establish, plan, create and lead the execution of short and long-term goals, business plans and strategies which minimize risk and build reputation for the University of Calgary.
  • Develop and implement communications and marketing strategies that provide strong, consistent positioning to help clients meet their business needs.
  • Through strategic and sustained communications efforts, support the university\'s enrolment management strategies locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Establish communications goals and objectives including developing plans, establishing metrics and tracking to support the achievement of strategic business goals including recruitment, enrolment management and excellent student service at all phases of the student life cycle.
  • Direct the use of brand guidelines and graphic standards throughout the work of their team.
  • Lead the creation, writing/editing and production of marketing materials, including the development of student recruitment and student financial support materials
  • Lead the creation, writing/editing and production of communication materials to support institutional change management for initiatives lead by the Office of the Registrar.
  • Responsible for cultivating relationships with outside professionals and agencies, designers, printers.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • University degree focused on public relations, journalism, or marketing with a minimum of 10 years of marketing and communications experience with at least five years at a senior level.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills as demonstrated by high-impact strategic planning documents, effective presentations and promotional materials, clear and consistent briefing notes, leadership communications, and more.
  • Demonstrable excellence in strategic planning and implementation of communications, marketing and event plans including; key message development, writing and editing, print and online production management, ability to multitask and manage time efficiently, politically astute, attentive to detail and quality while consistently meeting deadlines, a strong commitment and dedication to the organizations success.
  • Demonstrable experience in successfully reaching intended audiences through a variety of communications channels.
  • Proven ability to lead a team of direct reports and to coach them to achieve desired results.
  • Excellent relationship and team-building skills with a proven ability to develop partnerships, lead and participate effectively in groups, and leverage diverse skills of team members.
  • Possesses superior leadership, people management, and coaching/mentoring skills. Has the ability to provide work direction and expectations, performance feedback and recognition, and assist staff with acquiring development.
  • Is engaging, accessible, diplomatic, tactful, open and collaborative and thrives on a high level of respectful interaction with others.
  • Demonstrates a high standard of honesty, integrity and trust.
  • Strong work ethic and results oriented.
