Job Description

BACKGROUND:



Established in 1976, the Kelowna Community Music School (KCMS) has been a pillar of music education and community arts in the Okanagan for fifty years. With nearly 30 faculty members and hundreds of students, we are a nonprofit school dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality musical instruction that fosters the growth of our music community. KCMS is a member of the BC Association of Community Music Schools and is a registered non-profit charitable society.

POSITION SUMMARY:



The Managing Director will act as the chief spokesperson and leader for the organization. This role encompasses overseeing all executive functions at KCMS, including managing finances and administration functions, fundraising, marketing, communications, and community engagement. In partnership with the Artistic Director, the Managing Director will develop, implement, and monitor strategies that align with the organization's objectives and long-term plans. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.

RESPONSIBILITIES



A. Leadership and Strategy



Provide dynamic hands-on leadership to ensure the school's future sustainability and operational health. Lead the school's transition to a new facility, including space planning and partnership engagement and negotiation. Implement the school's strategic plan and contribute to its refinement in collaboration with the Board.

B. Management and Operations:



- Oversee all day-to-day operations, supervising contractors/consultants to ensure alignment with the organization's goals and objectives.

- Establish an administrative structure that promotes a productive work atmosphere and fosters healthy relations among faculty and staff.

- Prepare agendas for and facilitate regular board and faculty meetings.

- Assess organizational capacity, identify gaps, and implement systems to achieve desired outcomes.

- Work collaboratively with the Artistic Director and faculty in the planning and execution of key events and concerts.

- Oversee management of the school's database, website, and other technology needs.

C. Board Relations:



- Support the Board to fulfill their functions, including updates to the strategic plan and establishment of organizational goals and objectives.

- Work with the Board to review and modernize operational policies.

- Attend Board meetings to report on operational matters.

- Implement Board directives in collaboration with the Artistic Director.

D. Finance:



- Manage budgeting, financial forecasting, and monthly reporting,

- Identify new revenue streams and enhance cost-efficiency, in collaboration with the Artistic Director.

E. Fundraising:



- Strategize and execute effective donor stewardship methods with the Board.

- Lead and support fundraising campaigns, sponsorship initiatives, and donor relations.

- Manage the grant writing schedule.

F. Communications, Marketing, and Community Engagement:



- Serve as co- liaison with Artistic Director for parents, faculty, the Board, media, and community partners.

- Oversee the development and implementation of the marketing plan and efforts in consultation with the Artistic Director

- Maintain timely content for KCMS social media, newsletters, and website in collaboration with the Artistic Director.

- Publicly represent KCMS to enhance its visibility and reputation within the community.

QUALIFICATIONS:



- Proven leadership experience in non-profit, arts, or educational management (minimum 5 years).

- Demonstrated success in operational turnaround, fundraising, or strategic change management.

- Strong financial literacy with experience in budgeting, reporting, and grant writing.

- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

- Proficient in various technology platforms and school management systems.

- A post-secondary degree or equivalent experience in business, nonprofit management, or arts administration.

- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, database software, and relevant AI supports.

- Ability to work independently and in a timely manner.

PREFERRED ASSETS:



- Experience with facility transitions or capital campaigns.

- A passion for music education or the performing arts.

- Knowledge of the Kelowna community and its cultural landscape.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00-$75,000.00 per year
