ABOUT THE ROLE
SOCAN Visual Arts & Crafts services authorize the exhibition, the reproduction, and the public communication of artworks such as paintings, drawings, sculptures, architectural works, photographs, etc. by negotiating and issuing licenses in return for royalties which are then distributed to represented artists and rights holders. Reporting to the Director of Royalty Collections, the Visual Arts & Crafts Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the department.
This is a temporary one-year role, anticipated to begin in August 2022.
WHAT YOU'LL DO / KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Operations
  • Support all aspects of operations: documentation of artworks, licensing, collection and distribution of royalties
  • Ensure the operations of the department comply with guidelines set out by the International Council of Creators of Graphic, Plastic and Photographic Arts (CIAGP)
  • Monitor the evolution of the SOCAN schedule of fees for the use of artworks, taking into account the market, international practices and new trends, notably in the digital environment
  • Maintain and create relationships with industry stakeholders, professional associations, and foreign CMO's
Membership
  • Ensure the quality of rights management services offered to SOCAN members
  • Advertise and inform the public about SOCAN's services
  • Handle the affiliation process with artists and estates
  • Manage current relationships with high-profile members
Legal
  • Act as a legal subject matter expert to empower visual arts agents
  • Explain SOCAN's management of rights policies and fees to users
  • Negotiate and draft special licenses
  • Monitor the status of agreements with foreign CMOs
  • Work closely with the legal department to further develop member rights and contribute to the resolution of infringement cases
  • Monitor the legal landscape to identify challenges affecting visual artists and rights holders
WHAT YOU WILL BRING / QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field such as law
Experience
  • Significant experience in a similar position, preferably in collective management of copyright
  • Strong knowledge of the visual arts and crafts industry and challenges
  • Strong knowledge of the Copyright and Status of the Artist Acts
  • 3-5 years of management experience
Skillset / Nice to Have's
  • Strong interest and background in the visual arts and crafts
  • Keen analytic, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to make decisions and organize their implementation
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team, to implement the SOCAN strategic plan
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, in both French and English, and relationship-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and collaborate or work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to conceptualize and strategize
