ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
The Manager, Train Service is a key leadership role within Ontario Northland's Rail Division, responsible for overseeing daily mainline and yard operations to ensure safe and efficient service delivery. This position collaborates closely with internal departments to coordinate train movements and crew assignments, meeting the needs of both internal and external customers.
MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensure employee compliance with operating rules and practices through regular efficiency testing in accordance with current policies.
Provide clear leadership by setting direction, establishing goals, and offering coaching and performance feedback through continuous monitoring.
Oversee and participate in human resources functions including recruitment, training, performance management, employee investigations, disciplinary actions, and WSIB correspondence.
Address employee concerns and resolve issues related to the collective agreement.
Manage daily yard and train operations to maintain safety, operational efficiency, and high levels of customer service.
Plan and coordinate yard and mainline switching operations to meet customer demands using available resources effectively.
Improve car velocity by minimizing dwell time and optimizing car cycle times.
Investigate accidents and incidents, prepare detailed reports, and collaborate with the Manager of Rules, Rail Safety, and Regulatory Affairs to recommend corrective or disciplinary actions.
Respond to derailments and other emergencies, assuming the role of site commander when required.
Serve as the primary point of contact for shippers and customers, fostering strong working relationships.
Contribute to the design and modification of train services based on operational and customer requirements.
Handle customer concerns and complaints with professionalism and urgency.
Remain on-call 24/7, including nights and weekends, to support operational needs.
Travel regularly throughout the assigned territory to oversee operations and support teams.
REQUIREMENTS:
Secondary School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required
Qualified as a Conductor and Locomotive Engineer
Valid Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) certification
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in rail operations
Previous supervisory or management experience is preferred
Proven leadership abilities and strong customer service orientation
Experience interpreting and applying Collective Agreements
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision
Adaptable to rapidly changing situations and able to perform effectively under pressure
Strong team player with the ability to motivate and lead others toward achieving objectives
Results-driven with excellent organizational and prioritization skills
Must meet all Transport Canada medical fitness requirements for Safety Critical Positions
Familiarity with the Ontario Northland geographic territory is an asset
Valid driver's license and willingness to travel as required
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong commitment to health and safety, with a demonstrated ability to apply rules and procedures consistently across teams
