Position Title: Manager, Technical Accounting

Team and Location: Finance - Calgary, Alberta

Minimum Starting Salary from: $ 99,840/year

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Accounting Manager to join our finance team. Reporting to the Director, Technical Accounting, you will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with accounting standards and providing guidance on complex accounting matters. You will be responsible for researching and interpreting accounting regulations, implementing accounting policies, and providing technical support to various stakeholders within the organization. This is a key leadership role that requires a strong technical background in accounting combined with exceptional analytical and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accounting Policy Development: Develop and maintain accounting policies in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Stay updated on new accounting pronouncements and assess their impact on the organization.
  • Technical Accounting Research: Conduct comprehensive research on complex accounting issues, including revenue recognition, lease accounting, business combinations, and other relevant areas. Provide clear and concise guidance on the application of accounting principles.
  • Financial Reporting: Assist with the preparation of financial statements and ensure compliance with accounting standards.
  • Significant Contract Review: Performing review of Parkland\xe2\x80\x99s significant contracts and assessing any potential accounting implications
  • Internal Controls: Assess and enhance internal controls related to financial reporting. Collaborate with internal audit and compliance teams to identify areas of improvement and implement effective controls.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with various teams, including finance, legal, tax, and operations, to provide accounting guidance and ensure accurate financial reporting. Serve as a technical accounting resource for business initiatives, contracts, and transactions.
  • Mergers and Acquisitions: Provide accounting expertise and due diligence support for potential mergers, acquisitions, and other strategic transactions. Assess the accounting implications, identify risks, and provide recommendations.
  • External Audit Support: Coordinate and support external audit activities, including the preparation of audit schedules, responding to auditor inquiries, and addressing audit findings. Ensure compliance with audit requirements and facilitate a smooth audit process.
  • Training and Education: Conduct training sessions and workshops to educate finance and non-finance teams on accounting policies, procedures, and emerging accounting issues. Keep the organization updated on changes in accounting standards and their impact.
  • Process Improvement: Continuously evaluate and enhance accounting processes, systems, and controls to increase efficiency and accuracy. Identify opportunities for automation and implement solutions to streamline workflows.
Qualifications & Skills Required:
  • Bachelor\'s degree in accounting or finance; CPA or CA designation or equivalent is required
  • Experience working at a Big 4 accounting firm is considered an asset. Preference will be given to those with experience working in with companies in high growth or acquisitive environments.
  • Experience with JD Edwards EnterpriseONE ERP and Onestream Corporate Performance Management is an asset
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in a technical accounting role and experience in a leadership role
  • Thorough understanding of IFRS, with a proven ability to research, interpret, and apply complex accounting standards. Experience with the following accounting standards is considered an asset:
  • IFRS 3, 5, 9, 13,15, 16
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting requirements and experience in preparing financial statements.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian National Instruments rules governing the disclosure obligations for Canadian public entities is required. Knowledge of the US filing rules would be considered a plus, but not a requirement.
  • Experience with internal controls, risk management, and Canadian Sarbanes-Oxley (CSOX) compliance.
  • Excellent analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex accounting concepts to diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and build relationships across different functions.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Enthusiastic and committed to getting the job done in a fast paced, high-performing, dynamic environment with a willing to "roll up the sleeves" and "get the job done" attitude.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by the business
