Overview:
To assist the Director, Energy South Operations in planning and directing division goals, objectives, and programs as one of seven Managers in a team managed organizational structure. Under the direction of the Director, Energy South Operations leads the daily operation of the Divisions System Control team.
Operates as a supervisor for direct reports, which includes, setting objectives, assigning duties, assessing, and managing individual performance, with the aim of delivering results. This role requires the administering and monitoring plant operations to ensure effective and efficient operation of the corporation's hydro and diesel power interconnected and isolated girds through the operation of the corporations SCADA system in both the Energy South and North Divisions. The incumbent is responsible to provide major project scheduling in conjunction with Projects and Engineering lead projects, Transmission & Distribution Operations and hydro shutdown scheduling for all Operational Divisions as they integrate into the electrical system for generation changes from, Hydro to Diesel or Renewables and back to original state.
Responsibilities:
• As a member of the Energy South management team provides input to the Director regarding the development and evaluation of short and long term operational, capital, and strategic plans and budgets and assists in the preparation of planning and budget documents for corporate submission.
• Responsibility includes the development and updating of the generation stacking order of Hydro/Diesel mix of generation in the Yellowknife grid always keeping the power grid's ability to meet the Corporations Required Firm Capacity (RFC) in balance. This is met through daily and weekly publications of the generation needed and available on the Snare grid in coordination with the hydrology forecast produced by the Hydrology and Business Systems Specialist.
• Provides guidance and support for system control operators and operation of power generation and distribution of power to the Energy South Operations Division and the Corporation as a whole, ensuring the system voltage, power quality etc., is maintained within acceptable tolerances.
• Under the direction of the Director Energy South Operations, Hydro Managers, Projects and Engineering project managers as well as Transmission & Division Operations management team, coordinates scheduling for major projects as assigned and all hydro unit shutdowns. This includes team meetings on a regular and ad hoc basis to establish Operational Divisional goals and objectives as well as goals and objectives for participating divisions. The scheduling will include all Corporate divisions including team leadership, Operations activities, Hydro Maintenance Planners, Projects & Engineering, Information Technology, Operational Technology and Health Safety/Environment to ensure safe, efficient day-to-day operation and maintenance of hydro, diesel and renewable generation facilities.
• Under the direction of the Director, Energy South Operations participates in the recruitment of staff, prepares job descriptions, identifies training needs and the resources available to meet staff training requirements, and monitors and evaluates the work and performance of staff.
• Works with and provides support to the Corporations Hydrology and Business Systems Specialist for information on water flows, reservoir levels, day to day operations and ad hoc requests.
• Under direction from NTPC's Civil Engineer responsible for dam safety, supports the coordination of the dam inspections, water license inspections, as well as water license improvements and maintenance. Keeps informed and updated on government regulations concerns water usage, environment acts, etc. Ensures contingency plans are reviewed and updated with the Hydrology and Business Systems Specialist.
• Provide support and effective communications with the Customer Service Division on customer load limiters and customer disconnects.
• As assigned by the Director, Energy South Operations and in conjunction with the Divisions budgeting process, creates and manages the maintenance and operation budgets for this responsibility center.
• Coordinates the assessment and response by System Operators to unscheduled or emergency operations to ensure power generation is restored in a timely and efficient manner with effective collaboration with the Generation, System Control TD, communications and Customer Service teams as required.
• Liaises with areas all communities in the monitoring of power generation stations under NTPC control. Includes issuing generation releases and work protection/switching reviews and authorizations.
Qualifications:
• Certification as an Engineer or Technologist, Hydrologist, Red Seal Electrician, or Power Systems Electrician with a minimum 4 years utility experience demonstrating extensive related power plant operation & maintenance experience in either a hydro or diesel plant environment including distribution transmission substations, equivalencies may be considered.
• Must have at least one year of supervisory experience in supervising, planning, and coordinating the work of internal staff or contractors. Supervisory experience includes, but is not limited to, roles such as a direct supervisor, crew lead or lead hand and, directly assigning work.
• Must have a Class 5 drivers license.
• Must have a minimum of 1 (year) hands on operational experience with power grid control software solutions and advanced automation technology SCADA systems such as ATS Prism.
• Must have experience with shift work and / or creating shift schedules.
• Must undergo a satisfactory criminal record check.
• Strong organizational skills to coordinate team activities and ensure work is appropriately prioritized and actioned to meet Yellowknife generation and regional objectives.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills to research and assess a variety of generation issues and problems.
• Computer skills to operate a variety of software programs (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, electronic mail, Internet,) to input data, produce administrative and financial documents and reports.
Salary for this position ranges from $63.47/hr-$79.33/hr, plus a location and accommodation allowance of approximately $8,842 per annum.
