Position purpose:
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, Overseeing a team of Risk Management Nurses and an administrator this position ensures that the Student Placement Risk Management program is executed effectively by ensuring that the requirements for immunizations, police checks, CPR, first aid, and licenses for students/medical residents who are being placed in clinical settings as part of their assigned programs and experiential learning programs are met. Establishes standardized processes for the Student Placement Risk Management group to meet these requirements. Manages the day-to-day operational requirements of the program and its staff.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supervises a group of nurses and one administrator for the purpose of aligning resources with departmental objectives. Ensures the development of performance objectives and evaluations in order to maintain a fully-engaged workforce for the sector.
  • Devises a schedule which ensures effective client service delivery, including evenings, weekends, and vacations, and resolves scheduling challenges as they arise.
  • Oversees the development and ongoing improvement of a student placement risk management program specific to the Faculty/School/Department based on the requirements of the faculty and following the provincial standards established by the Council of Ontario Universities, and the clinical placement employers. Ensures program compliance and standardization of the services provided among the various client groups assigned to the Risk Management Nurses.
  • Oversees the diligence of all processes for review and assessment of medical and police records submitted by students/residents to determine if they meet the established standards. Develops a framework for the nurses for ensuring follow ups with students/medical residents whose records are not appropriate and do not meet the program's requirements. Ensures that consistent messaging is used by the risk management nurse group members for various client groups concerning the consequences of non-compliance.
  • Takes overall responsibility for various vaccination clinics, including planning, budget, scheduling and occasionally participating in the administration of vaccines. Ensures that ongoing needs are met for students/medical residents to participate in N-95 fit testing and CPR training.
  • Meets regularly with the key stakeholders (Vice-Deans Academic, placement coordinators) and employers to ensure that program delivery requirements are being met and to evaluate future needs, to communicate any program changes or enhancements, and to develop a communications strategy to ensure that students are clear on their respective placement compliance requirements.
What you will bring:
  • Graduation with a degree from a recognized University in nursing (or equivalent in professional experience/certifications).
  • Valid Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse.
  • Knowledge of immunization guidelines and best practices.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and standards in the area of epidemiology
  • Knowledge of human rights code and its applicability to the collection of confidential and sensitive information
  • Minimum of 7 years specialized nursing experience in evaluating immunization records.
  • Experience leading a team and in supervision
  • Experience in developing and implementing policies and procedures
  • Experience in applying health counselling techniques
  • Experience in using software for word processing, databases, spreadsheets, presentations, e-mail and internet.
  • Ability to analyse problems and develop solutions.
  • Initiative, discretion and autonomy.
  • Bilingualism - French and English (spoken and written)
Bilingualism: French and English (spoken and written); to be considered for this position, candidates must be rated at the Low Advanced proficiency level or higher for both oral comprehension and reading comprehension in their second official language. The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.
