Position Overview The Dean's Office in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Manager, Research, Gradaute Education & Central Support. The Manager, Research and Graduate Education reports to the Director of Operations (DO) and works in close collaboration with the Associate Deans, Research, Emerging Scholars and Professional Development. This position is responsible for the operational leadership of UCVMs research and graduate education support teams. The Manager will lead a team of support staff and ensures the policies, procedures, technologies, training, and other tools required by our Professional Development, Research and Emerging Scholars programs are effectively developed, implemented, and supported. The incumbent must be a proven leader and team builder, able to work independently and establish priorities to successfully lead and complete multiple projects, while staying in close communication with the ADs, the DO and other leaders. The ability to work with many different people and personalities, as well as strong communication and relationship-building skills are essential to liaise and collaborate effectively with faculty and staff. This position is predominantly located at Foothills Campus, but from time-to-time, work at the Spy Hill Campus will be required. This position works 35 hours a week, Monday to Friday, but on occasion, there may be the need to work outside of regular hours. Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Leadership
    • Full managerial discretion for direct reports, including recruitment, performance management, and discipline up to and including termination
    • Promote a collaborative team environment through excellent role modeling and coaching, training, and assigning work fairly and in a way that ensures breadth of skill and development of the team
    • Ensure that effective operations and a high level of quality assurance are maintained at all times, so that students consistently receive professional and fair treatment
    • Provide strong leadership and uses excellent communication, problem-solving and analytical skills to lead and motivate individuals to work cohesively in a team environment
    • Manage advising policies and procedures, ensuring they are developed in accordance with university processes, policies, and procedures
  • Strategy
    • In collaboration with Deans, develop objectives and set goals for Research, Graduate Education and Professional Development to align with the faculty strategic plan
    • Develop plans (staff, space, equipment, etc) and allocate resources within the unit to meet the evolving needs of students, faculty and UCVM goals
    • Assist in the development, documentation, and implementation of practices that contribute to promotion and achievement of the goals of the "students first" service concept
    • Collaborate and communicate with the campus community on issues related to audit assessment, compliance, confidentiality, system requirements, and changes in policies and procedures
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree is required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience, including 3 in a university environment required
  • Proven ability to build and lead a team, provide mentorship and create a positive team-based environment including excellent relationship building, communication, and coaching skills and ability to work with a broad range of personalities
  • Ability to resolve conflicts related to highly sensitive and confidential matters, and dealing with escalated and/or emotional issues empathetically and professionally
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze business needs and participate in the development of new processes
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the University of Calgary graduate degrees, research programs and faculty merit, promotion and tenure and their related policies and procedures
  • Comprehensive knowledge of budgets, goals, objectives, policies and procedures; including aligning staff and resources to achieve targets
  • Ability to manage multiple project priorities and deliverables
  • Proven ability as a strategic, big picture thinker and problem solver
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing priorities
  • Possess advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite, working knowledge of PowerPoint and familiarity with electronic filing system and databases
  • Must be open to learning and development and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Experience with PeopleSoft, SharePoint, and Desire2Learn (Brightspace) functionality and administration is considered a strong asset
