Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery, and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Study Manager to join our Projects Team in Sudbury.

This is a permanent position.
Work schedule: Monday to Friday, business hours.

The Study Manager role is responsible for managing, coordinating, and the overall administration of a project or multiple projects. The projects include FEL 3 studies and will transition to Project Execution. The Study Manager is responsible to deliver their projects within scope, cost, and schedule baseline, while ensuring the projects are delivered within the safety and quality objectives agreed upon for the project.

As a member of the Project Team, the incumbent will be responsible for managing and leading FEL 3 studies through a structured process aligned with Vale's Project Delivery System.The Study Manager is accountable for defining and delivering studies to refine the Project's technical and commercial attributes while developing a detailed execution plan for successful project execution.

Some of the other major accountabilities include:

  • Leads and actively promotes behaviors with Vale's safety goals and is accountable for achieving outcomes by participating in the design and site inspections in their project area and ensuring all follow-up actions are carried out.
  • Carries clear responsibility and accountability for the delivery of the Project objectives for the FEL 3 study as agreed by the Senior Project Manager of Sudbury Mines taking into consideration the full project lifecycle including engineering, procurement, project controls, contract management, and quality.
  • Educates team members and peers on the Project Delivery System (PDS) deliverables.
  • Manages and ensures compliance to project procedures including the management of project documentation and ensuring these are received, reviewed, commented on, responded to, and incorporated in project archives.
  • Manages and coordinates the outputs of their assigned project team or teams in line with the detailed scope, cost, and schedule control baselines and manages any project changes in terms of this agreed baseline. This includes interfacing with Operations for the environment, community relations, operational readiness, and the project quality governance requirements.
  • Ensures that the study considers all of the Vale critical initiatives on Safety, Environment, and Governance within the study design.
  • Primary interface with other Project Managers and Operations Managers/Supt to ensure no aspect of the project is overlooked or lags in progress, develops and implements recovery plans.
  • Leads, coordinates, and monitors project team members' performance and influences their activities as necessary to ensure project requirements are achieved.
  • Oversees Contract Management of their assigned contract packages to ensure timely submission and approval of all Contract Changes.
  • Mitigates project delays by coordinating the different functions and establishing priorities.
  • Functionally accountable for positions supporting their projects.
  • Recommends to the Senior Project Manager of Sudbury Mines any requirements for additional resources and strategies to maintain the schedule.
  • The Study Manager is responsible to ensure the successful Setup, Execution, Control, Evaluation and Close Out of each study as required.
About You

Education:
  • Post-secondary degree in Engineering (P.Eng)
Experience:
  • 10-15 years of leadership experience.
  • Working in an underground mining setting.
  • Managing capital cost expenditures related to a major project.
  • Leading the advancement of a major mining project.
  • Development planning for a brownfield/greenfield operating facility where disruption of operations will negatively affect operating costs.
Skills:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, planning organizational, and time management skills.
  • Strong software skills in Microsoft Office products and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (i.e. SAP).
