RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operations:
  • Oversee the Occupational Health & Safety department including: health/infectious disease surveillance, safety services, WSIB claims management, Ministry of Labour compliance, disability management, employee health services, immunization campaigns, health education and training programs, policies and procedures development, workplace violence prevention program, joint occupational health and safety, staff wellbeing & wellness, etc.
  • Collaborate with internal and external leaders and stakeholders to meet organizational goals and priorities
  • Propose innovative programs and services, and changes to existing programs, to ensure optimal performance and compliance with changing guidelines, standards, and legislation.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in the development, implementation, and maintenance of hospital and departmental policies, procedures, training programs and guidelines based on current scientific literature and authoritative guidelines, and continuous improvement initiatives, as it relates to the provision of occupational health and safety services.
  • Acts as a key resource to management and to the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JOHSC), representing the hospital with external parties including the Ministry of Labour and Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), WSIA Appeals Tribunal, Hospital Benefits supplier, Employee & Family Assistance Program Provider, and other relevant groups/entities.
  • Direct, control and evaluate the delivery of department services, organizes, and direct the work of the Occupational Health and Safety staff .
  • Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of occupational nursing practice and nursing services and those of other regulated health care professionals.
  • Translate program leadership decisions into actionable plans, by fostering collaboration among stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ensures alignment of the OHSS team and department with the hospital\xe2\x80\x99s mission, vision, and values, while working together to successfully achieve strategic objectives.
Leadership/Communication:
  • Develop, demonstrate, and maintain honest, open, and clear lines of communication with all members of the hospital, other departments, community groups, and agencies that promote engagement, trust, and cooperation.
  • Model positive acceptance towards change and support others to adapt to change.
  • Foster and maintain a team who can respond to the immediate needs of all members of the hospital.
  • Coach and develop staff to think critically and to solve problems.
  • Create an environment that promotes professional practice, evidence informed practice, innovation, and accountability.
  • Assume a leadership role in program projects or hospital wide initiatives.
  • Provide an environment that promotes continuous learning and professional development for staff
Resource Utilization/Management:
  • Recruit, hire, schedule, promote, performance manage, mentor, and develop direct reports to ensure quality optimal individual / team performance.
  • Accountable for day-to-day department activities, including the management of human and material resources, day-to-day staffing and scheduling, development and support of a healthy workplace, risk and utilization measurements, and facilitation of improvement initiatives and change management
  • Foster effective working relationships and networks within the team and with other teams across the organization.
  • Ensure the alignment of human, financial, and physical resources for the delivery of safe, effective, efficient care and service.
  • In collaboration with the Director, develop, monitor, and interpret the departmental budget to maximize financial resources for health and safety programing.
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility in management of program budget.
  • Develop and implement strategies to address budget variances.
  • Analyze human resource requirements and plan appropriate staffing patterns.
  • Respond to, investigate, establish plans to, and follow up with arising issues, complaints, and incidents.
  • Manage labour relations issues in accordance with respective college requirements, contractual obligations, and registration and license requirements.
  • Provide performance evaluations and feedback to staff.
Quality Improvement:
  • Create alignment between the improvement efforts within the program and strategic priorities of the hospital.
  • Coordinate the implementation of quality improvement activities within the department and leadership of the quality improvement plan for the program.
  • Evaluate current practice; plan and implement change based on, health and safety requirements, trends, innovative technology in alignment with regional/provincial/national standards, legislation, and guidelines.
  • Address safety and quality concerns as a team
  • Ensure structures and processes are in place to monitor key performance indicators.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Bachelor of Nursing
  • Minimum of five (5) years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in the field of Occupational Health.
  • Minimum of three (3) years\xe2\x80\x99 recent experience in progressively more responsible leadership roles
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, conflict resolution, and communication skills.
  • Evidence of facilitation, collaboration, and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated computer competency.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Ontario Human Rights Code
  • Proven experience in occupational health programs/process design and development of program metrics.
PREFERRED:


  • Occupational Health Nurse or certification in a related discipline such as COHN, or CRSP preferred.
  • Previous clinical and/or management experience in Occupational Health and Safety preferred.
