Summary

The Manager, International Student Experience is responsible for advancing the University's goals regarding the retention, learning and wellbeing of international students at UBC Vancouver by overseeing the conceptualization and development of multiple and comprehensive programs and initiatives supporting students with international experience. This includes oversight of existing key signature programs (such as Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program and the World University Services Canada Refugee Program) as well as the strategic development and design of several new programs, systems and initiatives that serve emerging needs as well as foster a better understanding of the barriers facing students, particularly at-risk scholars, with international experience. The Manager is responsible for leading a team in the development and delivery of a complex constellation of initiatives and programs that requires the incumbent to draw upon resources across campus, leverage the capacities of others to create those resources where they do not exist, support the ongoing development and operationalization of a strategy and vision for what is to be achieved, and continue to work toward a changed culture inside and outside the University.

Will have an office on the UBC Point Grey campus. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required. International travel may be required.



Organizational Status
International Student Development (ISD) provides a wide range programming and services supporting the full participation/integration of students with international experience in all aspects of university life throughout their time at UBC Vancouver. Reporting to the Director, International Student Development, the incumbent supervises and mentors staff, who support students with international experience and works collaboratively with the UBC community and key stakeholders to meet the University's commitment to supporting these students. They work collaboratively with colleagues within the Vice President, Students portfolio, International Student Initiative (ISI) and Enrolment Services, Faculties, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, student organizations, the AMS/GSS, and other units and departments across the University. The Manager is the primary liaison with the Mastercard Foundation, Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program network institutions and with the UBC Development staff affiliated with these initiatives.

The Manager may also take on leadership roles in cross-functional team projects and may supervise student interns seeking a student development work experience.

Work PerformedDevelops and operationalizes a comprehensive strategy to achieve vision, goals, and targets. Draws on and activates resources across campus to support the development and operationalization of this strategy. Develops and leads the coordination and facilitation of multiple programs and educational initiatives, forums, presentations, lectures and workshops to all levels of the University community with the goal of enhancing the experiences of students with international experience. Leads the ongoing evaluation of these offerings in order to identify potential gaps in order to improve and innovate. Develops new systems, guidelines, best practices and policies across all programs, ensuring consistency across all programming and alignment to strategic vision and plans Develops and implements organizational change strategies that promote meaningful participation in all aspects of university life for students with international experience. Identifies opportunities for new initiatives and research best practices in international student services, innovative programming, and supports.Designs strategies to address opportunities and remediate barriers. Works with the Director, International Student Development to ensure their incorporation into the appropriate VPS portfolio and university plans. Builds and maintains partnerships with the Mastercard Foundation, the Mastercard Foundation Network and across UBC to ensure quality support services are available Ensures that the delivery of a complex constellation of initiatives and programs and services is consistent and serves the needs of the students the unit supports Provides oversight of the budget management and financial reports for funding bodies; ensuring effective program documentation to account for program successes and organizational learning; and prepare reports for the programs as appropriate. Provides strategic oversight for the recruitment and admissions process to ensure the achievement of identified targets are met in accordance with funding agreements Bring together staff, faculty, students and community members to contribute to the knowledge base about students with international experience to advance students ability to contribute within the institution and be recognized for their contributions. Perform duties consistent with the mandate of Student Affairs as requested.


Consequence of Error/Judgement

The incumbent represents the University, the students and SA. Must exercise tact and diplomacy when interacting with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including: UBC senior administrators, staff, students, alumni, faculty, staff within community organizations, individual community members, and others in external educational institutions and professional associations. Incorrect decisions would have an impact on the programs and services offered to students, and the reputation of the unit and the University. Failure to meet programming, service and reporting targets can jeopardize the Mastercard Foundation Program gift. Poor decisions can result is negative implications to the sponsorship of refugees and/or displaced youths.



Supervision Received

Working under the direction of the Director, International Student Development, the Manager acts independently and exercises considerable judgment and innovation in working with UBC students, faculty and staff and staff at the Mastercard Foundation and Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program network institutions.

Supervises and mentors Program Manager for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program as well as advising and program staff supporting the international student experience.

Overseas work/study experience preferred. Knowledge of additional language(s) preferred. Experience designing and delivering program assessment and evaluation. Knowledge of theories of intercultural communication and community engagement. Expertise in designing and delivering educational workshops and managing large events. Excellent interpersonal skills and intercultural sensitivity. Excellent computer skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Ability to work effectively in teams and to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members. * Ability to manage the complexity inherent within a multi-faceted work environment focused on broad outcomes for students.
