DESCRIPTION:
This role is a thrilling opportunity for someone passionate about advancing research and facilitating meaningful scientific contributions. By managing and improving the grant application process, youxe2x80x99ll play a pivotal role in empowering research teams to secure funding for groundbreaking projects, while ensuring compliance and efficiency. Youxe2x80x99ll also be at the forefront of strategic supportxe2x80x94matching researchers with funding opportunities, providing expert advice, and guiding award nominations to amplify recognition and career growth. The position combines administrative excellence with innovative problem-solving and collaboration within the vibrant Toronto research community, making it an engaging and rewarding chance to create lasting impacts in the field.
Reporting to the Director, Research Operations & Business Development, the Manager, Grant & Award Development position will lead the people and processes which provide administrative and strategic support around competitive research funding applications (operating grant applications, infrastructure grant applications, and Awards and Honours nominations), ensuring continued growth and success of BRIxe2x80x99s research programs.
Provides excellent customer service by working closely with our talented scientists and their teams, managing their grant and award portfolio and their main point of contact for pre-award grant operations. Elevates our researchers through strategic award nominations.
This is a hybrid role; with 3 days per week on site.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Grant Application Administrative Support

  • Manage grant applications submitted by research teams, including the coordination of major competitions. Involves setting timelines and outlining processes that comply with both agency and institutional policies, requirements and guidelines to successfully submit all applications by the agency deadline
  • Manage and advise on improvements to the process to track, audit, and record applications and ensure that all grant applications are reviewed for administrative completeness & compliance
  • Manage and develop improvements for a clear, concise application process that complies with institutional and agency policies. Includes a communication plan that relays the necessary steps and requirements, incorporate feedback from clients
  • Coordinate the administrative aspects of managing grant applications, including (but not limited to): reviewing grant applications for compliance, completeness, and correctness, reviewing project budgets and drafting institutional correspondence, forms and assurances
  • Manage the process to track metrics related to grant applications; benchmark Holland Bloorviewxe2x80x99s grants metrics against all available external metrics and information.
  • Serve as Institutional Representative with agencies
  • Serve as BRI representative on various committees in the broader Toronto research community (e.g. TAHSN)
  • Facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of service goals, procedures and objectives by evaluating and constantly improving standards of practice
Grant Application Strategic Support:
  • Manage and direct the process that ensures all research funding opportunities, both broad and targeted funding opportunities, are routinely found and disseminated. Match funding opportunities to BRI researchers
  • Providing strategic support and institutional templates for major granting competitions, overseeing grant writing support including reading, reviewing, editing, and discussing specific scientific proposals and providing letters of support from BRI
  • Ensure processes are in place to comply with all granting agency requirements, including Research Security and data management practices
Awards Administration and Strategic Support
  • Manage, develop and oversee processes and best practices around Awards and Honours including the coordination of nominations, and where relevant setting up review committees
  • Ensure that Awards and Honours nominations are done in close collaboration with the Vice-President, Research, the University of Toronto and other leaders where applicable.
  • Strategically match awards opportunities to BRI scientists; supporting their career progression and increasing recognition of Holland Bloorview
  • Manage internal awards (e.g. graduate scholarships, Pursuit award, Whittaker award and others) process
Providing Education to Researchers and Staff
  • Organize and run educational sessions related to grant development and award nominations for research staff
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • University degree in Healthcare, Business or related field, master's an asset
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in the grant funding environment, academic, research or healthcare
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with Canadian and International research funding agency policies, requirements, and processes
  • Experience with coordinating award nomination and advanced knowledge of major Canadian and International awards and honours (e.g. Royal Society, CAHS, Order of Canada
  • Experience with reviewing/developing competitive research funding applications, especially health science research (e.g. CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, CFI, NIH)
  • Ability to quickly read, interpret, and synthesize granting agency policies, instructions, and terms and conditions
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Excellent training and guidance skills as well as experience with developing templates and providing guidance/training
  • Proficient in the use of the computer for word processing, spreadsheet, etc., required
  • Excellent analytical/problem solving skills with the ability to resolve complex issues/recommend solutions required
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications and customer service skills to work effectively with varying level of staff required
  • Ability to foster cooperation and work collaboratively within and across departments with a broad range of interests in a highly diverse work environment required
