Position Description





SickKids is inviting candidates to apply for the 24-month full time contract position of Manager \xe2\x80\x93 Grant Applications, Development & Awards now available in the SickKids Research Institute. Supporting 600 basic and clinical Scientists, the Manager will lead the people and processes which provide administrative and strategic support around competitive research funding applications (operating grant applications, infrastructure grant applications, and Awards and Honours nominations). Working with leading Scientists and their research teams; Hospital and University Administrators, Managers and Accountants around the world, the Manager will have a real impact on the continued growth and success of SickKids\xe2\x80\x99 ambitious research program. The successful candidate will bring the highest standards of professionalism and dedication and will contribute to practices, policies, and processes to ensure the services we provide around research funding applications are high in both quality and efficiency. Here\xe2\x80\x99s What You\xe2\x80\x99ll Get to Do: Application Administrative Support:
  • Manage all grant applications submitted by SickKids Investigators, including the coordination of major competitions. Involves setting timelines and outlining processes that comply with both agency and institutional policies, requirements and guidelines in order to successfully submit all applications by the agency deadline.
  • Manage and advise on improvements to the process to track, audit, and record applications and ensure that all grant applications are reviewed for administrative completeness & compliance.
  • Manage and develop improvements for a clear, concise application process that complies with institutional and agency policies. Includes a communication plan that relays the necessary steps and requirements, incorporate feedback from clients.
Application Strategic Support:
  • Manage and direct the process that ensures all funding opportunities, both broad and targeted funding opportunities, are routinely found and disseminated.
  • Ensure direct support is provided to Investigators through providing strategic support and institutional templates for major granting competitions, overseeing grant writing support including reading, reviewing, editing, and discussing specific scientific proposals and providing letters of support from Research Executive.
  • Manage, develop and oversee processes and best practices around Awards and Honours and oversee the administration and coordination of the Awards and Honours committee.
  • Ensure that Awards and Honours nominations are done in close collaboration with the Hospital CEO, the University of Toronto and other leaders where applicable.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to Investigators and their teams , the broader SickKids research community and external community on granting agency guidelines and requirements and SickKids policies and processes.
People Management:
  • Manage a team of 5-6 direct reports, directing ongoing training and mentoring to ensure a high level of staff productivity and quality of work in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Manage staff workloads, support and serve as backup to staff in the event of absences or during peaks in volume. Serve as a navigator for the team in a continuously changing environment.
Other:
  • Navigate and provide advice on complex, highly specialized or sensitive issues through troubleshooting, complex analysis and collaboration across departments.
  • Manage the process to track metrics around the activities related to research funding applications, analyze the results to advise on improvements in data integrity.
  • Manage the review and revision of policies related to Research Applications, while identifying how specific policies are affected by broader department/institution changes. Develop processes to disseminate policy information and ensure compliance.
  • Serve as Institutional Representative with agencies, in making commitments, representations, and assurances to maintain eligibility with various granting agencies on behalf of SickKids.
  • Serve as Representative on various committees within SickKids and in the broader Toronto research community, with discussions regarding implementation of various institutional and agency requirements, such as Data Management, Research Security, etc.
  • Learn, develop, and implement new processes, tools, and procedures to allow the team to be more effective and efficient.
  • Other responsibilities as needed.
Here\xe2\x80\x99s What You\xe2\x80\x99ll Need:
  • Undergraduate degree related to either life science or business.
  • 3-5 years experience in the grant funding environment \xe2\x80\x93 academic, research or healthcare.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with Canadian and International research funding agency policies, requirements, and processes.
  • Experience with reviewing/developing competitive research funding applications, especially health science research (e.g. Canadian Institutes of Health Research, National Institutes of Health, Canada Foundation for Innovation).
  • Experience and proven ability developing and leading a team of professionals to effectively coordinate a high volume of diverse tasks with hard deadlines simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, negotiate, and problem-solve with a diverse variety of stakeholders who may have conflicting interests and priorities.
  • General resourcefulness and ability to take initiative and quickly find, learn, and assimilate new information is a must.
  • A very high level and demonstrated literacy and numeracy skills is a must, including ability to quickly read, interpret, and synthesize granting agency policies, instructions, and terms and conditions and the ability to develop and review complex budgets.
  • Superior time management and project management skills and ability to provide project management oversight on large, complicated, or multi-site applications with other Universities and Hospitals.
  • Ability to communicate and negotiate effectively with Scientists, research staff, other SickKids business units, external public and private organizations.
  • Collaborate with and form solid working relationships with counterparts at funding agencies and external collaborating institutions. Broker and negotiate solutions to any problems around grant applications.
  • Advanced-user knowledge of Microsoft Office applications is a must, including Word, Excel and SharePoint. While not required, experience working with PeopleSoft is an asset.
