Job Summary

Reporting to the Director, Collections, the Manager, Digital Resources is responsible for the leadership, strategic direction, and focus for the Library's digital collection, overseeing the acquisition, implementation, budgeting and assessment of digital resources, as well as system training. The position also supports the Library's local history collection, and the Library Archives, by developing digitization strategies.


The Manager, Digital Resources ensures the design, implementation, and evaluation of systems, tools, and processes which enhance the customer experience and access to the Library's digital collections.


Responsibilities and Activities

Digital Resource Management



Manage the full cycle of electronic resources, including identifying, evaluating, and selecting new resources, participating in trials, negotiating licensing agreements, purchasing, and onboarding resources, maintaining license documentation, and supporting training and troubleshooting. Build and maintain relationships with vendors, monitor current and emerging issues and trends, and understand digital collection development trends and business models. Develop a long-term strategic vision for digital collection development that includes both vendor-provided resources and local content.



Budgeting



Monitor expenditures and commitments to ensure that funds are expended at an appropriate rate and support Director in budget planning.



Leadership



Communicate to Managers and staff the importance of digital resources and their relationship to the broader Library's mission, vision, and values; inspire staff to engage and promote digital resources to customers. Champion Intellectual Freedom and equitable access to the collection.



Performance Management



Manage and report on team performance; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports and hold people accountable for achieving them, taking appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of team/personal objectives.



Internal and External Collaborator Engagement



Establish and maintain effective relationships with other areas of the Library as well as external collaborators, partners and vendors. Advocate for the Library's interests and needs. Seek out changes that positively impact patrons and staff. Collaborate with Service Design, IT, and Marketing to support and promote the use of digital resources.



Organizational Capacity Building



Use the organization's formal development framework to identify the team's individual development needs. Plan and implement actions, including continuing professional development, to build their professional skills. Provide informal training or coaching to others throughout the organization in own area of expertise to enable others to improve performance and fulfill personal potential.



Qualifications


------------------


Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited library school or approved equivalent degree or University Bachelor level degree and directly related experience. Demonstrated experience in digital collection development and access, including three years' experience in management positions. Understanding of the e-resource management lifecycle, including the acquisition models, price models, access, and authentication methods. Demonstrated understanding of intellectual freedom and a commitment to upholding the Canadian Federation of Library Associations position statements and Calgary Public Library's Intellectual Freedom and Collection policies. Experience working with vendors and negotiating licenses. Awareness of emerging trends, strategic issues, and best practices related to cataloguing, digital resources, licensing, and collection access. Experience supporting collections and technical services functions, including acquisitions, cataloguing, processing and maintenance of library materials in a variety of formats would be an asset. Demonstrated high performance and experience in customer service, strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
