Job Description


Reporting to the Chief Innovation Officer, the Manager, Communications and Public Relations works closely with OFI\'s Chief Executive Officer to proactively develop and implement OFI communications and public relations plans and tactics that support the strategy and objectives of OFI.
Key Responsibilities

  • Develop key messages that advance OFI\'s strategy and goals, and prepare communications for senior leadership.
  • Gather and disseminate accurate, consistent, and timely information across internal and external communication channels, including working closely with researchers at partner institutions to tell their stories to multi-faceted audiences.
  • Develop and lead OFI\'s social media strategy and web presence; plan and oversee creative design to support OFI\'s communications, public relations, and government relations goals.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with media; respond to and seek out media opportunities.
  • Manage OFI\'s brand by ensuring alignment of all public communications with OFI and Dalhousie brand guidelines.
  • Liaise with central Communications and Marketing departments and researchers at Dalhousie University and partner universities: Memorial University of Newfoundland, University of Prince Edward Island, Universit\xc3\xa9 du Qu\xc3\xa9bec \xc3\xa0 Rimouski, and Laval University, as well as with partner institutions in the United States and Europe.
NoteThe successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications
  • University degree in public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related discipline with a minimum of 7 years of public relations and communications experience, including working with media (or equivalent combination of training and experience)
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly relay information in a compelling way and to translate complicated concepts into clear messages.
  • Good investigative and research skills, as well as strong problem-solving and diplomacy skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, proactive, and capable of working independently to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to create and implement public relations and communications strategies with proven success.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to build professional relationships with media, stakeholders, partners, researchers, and other audiences.
Assets
  • Bilingual in English and French, both verbal and written.
  • An understanding of ocean and/or climate science.
  • Education/training in written communications.
