  • Recruitment range: $72,242 - $79,650 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
  • Performance range: $93,951 salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases.
Job Summary
Mandate:
The Makerspace Lab Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day operation, safety, and technical stewardship of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science Makerspace. Reporting to designated academic and technical leadership, the position provides senior-level operational oversight of a shared, student-facing fabrication environment that supports experiential learning, student design projects, and interdisciplinary innovation in alignment with UVic's academic mission.
The role ensures that Makerspace facilities, equipment, and users operate within established safety, access, and policy frameworks, while enabling students, instructors, and teaching assistants to use advanced prototyping and fabrication tools effectively and responsibly. Through a high degree of independent judgement, the position manages access, training, and operational decisions and serves as the primary point of continuity for Makerspace operations.
Objectives:
  • Ensure the Makerspace operates as a safe, reliable, and well-managed technical environment aligned with faculty and university policies. Enable student learning and project success by providing effective training frameworks, technical guidance, and clear operational processes.
  • Maintain the ongoing readiness, availability, and appropriate use of Makerspace equipment, tools, and consumables.
  • Establish and sustain consistent access, safety, and usage standards for a diverse user community.
  • Support and coordinate student staffing models that extend Makerspace service capacity while maintaining appropriate oversight, safety, and quality standards.
Working Conditions
The position is based primarily in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science Makerspace, a student-facing fabrication and prototyping environment. The role involves working with mechanical and powered equipment and requires adherence to established safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment; occasional work outside of standard business hours may be required to support operational needs.
Job Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with prototyping, fabrication, and shop-based equipment.
  • Working familiarity with CNC machining, 3D printing technologies, laser cutting, and general maker tools.
  • Experience supporting users with varied technical skill levels in a student-facing or educational environment.
  • Ability to apply and consistently enforce safety procedures and operational policies.
  • Experience delivering technical training and maintaining instructional documentation.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement, and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor student staff in a technical environment.
  • Commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment
Assets and Preferences
  • Experience working in an academic makerspace or fabrication lab.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360).
  • Experience with electronics tools, microcontrollers, or embedded systems used in student projects.
  • Familiarity with UVic programs, policies, procedures, and business systems.
