TITLE: MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN



Temporary Position



JOB DESCRIPTION



Maintains all production equipment and building systems: develops plans and procedures to carry out and administer the maintenance program in the plant; repairs production equipment on an emergency basis when production requirements are high; plans major repair and overhaul work at a time when machinery is available; co ordinates work with outside service technicians; gains knowledge of millwrighting, mechanics, electrical systems, electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics and equipment operation to assist in maintaining the shop; does regular PM work as well as greasing and oiling; requisitions parts and controls spare parts inventory; gets outside contract help periodically by reviewing jobs and getting price quotes; operates fork lift to move parts and to assist in maintenance work; designs and builds safety equipment like machine guards; maintains ventilation systems; removes snow; develops new PM programs; assists others in troubleshooting.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:



_ knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical circuitry, electronic controls, millwrighting techniques as learned in an industrial mechanics or electro-mechanical trade at the journeyman level.

_ understanding of operation and design requirements of all equipment in the shop.

_ experience in troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing and overhauling shop equipment over a period of 3 to 5 years.

_ ability to read drawings, system instructions, engineering specifications, training manuals, operation manuals and technical information in repair and maintenance manuals.

_ organizational ability to plan and prepare the work, set priorities, plan material requirements, conduct inventories, maintain minimum levels of material, take apart and assemble complex mechanical systems; plan preventative maintenance work, troubleshoot problem areas and complete reports.

_ analytical skills to operate complex systems, troubleshoot, correct system defects, read electrical schematic drawings, plan procedures and analyze machine induced quality problems.

_ knowledge of the waste treatment system and the importance of the environmental requirements.

_ knowledge of the Nordsen auto paint system including detailed preventative maintenance systems and troubleshooting procedures.

_ extensive knowledge of the ventilation system on the paint curing system (oven) and the gas controls and gas line precautions.

_ communication skills to assist in the requirement for coordinating work between contractors, engineering, management and shop personnel and for directing others during overhauls or emergency repair periods.

_ knowledge of the company procedures and legal requirements for handling hazardous waste along with complete knowledge of the WHMIS requirements in the area.

_ general knowledge of all process operations with particular knowledge of machine operational systems.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

_ knowledge of materials and parts used in repairing machinery as well as knowledge of oils and greases to ensure proper function of mechanical workings.

_ mathematical skills for precise measurement of parts and calculation of complex ratios.

_ ability to direct and train other employees and get cooperation in areas where assistance is required.

_ knowledge of the care and handling of hazardous materials and the operation of a fork lift.

- ability to read, understand and follow WIP sheet

- knowledge of the scanning procedure

- knowledge to the workers responsibilities under the OH&SA

MENTAL EFFORT REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB:



_ concentration on tasks to ensure accuracy especially as it pertains to the handling of hazardous material and re-assembly of mechanical and electrical systems.

_ attentiveness to detail in following procedures, doing systems checks, keeping logs and records, maintaining a safe work area, protecting others in the area and doing maintenance procedures.

_ ability to shift between periods of concentration and the requirement for observing system operation.

_ patience in directing and training others.

_ attentiveness to the presence of others for safety reasons.

PHYSICAL EFFORT REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB:



_ manual dexterity in using tools with speed and accuracy.

_ energy and stamina to accomplish the tasks standing or travelling between work stations for long periods of time.

_ strength in hands and forearms to operate tools in a more or less constant mode.

_ physical ability to lift or push heavy objects and operate tools in positions that require reaching, grasping, twisting and turning in the performance of the job.

RESPONSIBILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH PERFORMING THE JOB:



_ responsible for monitoring and maintaining all equipment in the shop and for all building systems.

_ maintains all equipment manuals, drawings and instruction sheets.

_ maintains a supply of critical spare parts and orders parts as required to complete repairs or overhauls.

contacts and directs outside contractors and equipment service representatives for repair requirements.

_ keeps management informed on key maintenance items and reports on overall performance of shop equipment.

_ conducts PM programs on a regular basis.

_ solicits information from operators on machine performance as part of the equipment assessment process.

_ gains knowledge of equipment operation at a level where assistance can be given to operators in learning new procedures or in troubleshooting problems.

_ responsible for understanding and maintaining the wash system with special attention to the environmental requirements of the waste water treatment equipment to protect the company from a failure of the process.

_ follows all WHMIS regulations and up-dates knowledge in the area of chemical spill procedures.

_ directs own activity so as to ensure that the shop runs at maximum efficiency.

_ maintains of ordered work area and operates in a safe manner so as to protect fellow employees and self.

_ brings major problems or problems that have an impact on other areas to the attention of supervision.

_ stores, handles, mixes and transfers chemicals, oils and greases in a safe manner and protects others and the equipment from accidental spills and contact.

_ reports accidents, damage or safety problems to supervisor immediately.

_ follows all job procedures as detailed in the operator inspection plans.

_ follows general plant rules for safety and proper procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS:



_ works in a factory environment with occasional periods where heat and cold are uncomfortable and fumes from equipment and processes are present.

_ must work in an areas where adverse exposure to chemicals and oils is possible.

_ works in a job where injury from cuts, burns, muscle pulls, inhalation of fumes, falls and lifting procedures is an occupational hazard.

_ works in the presence of noise is periodic and where the need for hearing protection is a requirement for many activities.

_ physically handles objects between 5 and 30 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally must handle units weighing in excess of 30 pounds

_ must work with and handle hazardous materials

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS



MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN



SELECTION CRITERIA:



_ candidates for this position need to have advanced analytical abilities, good organizational skill and knowledge of maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.

_ the ability to read and follow precise mathematical formulas is very important.

_ candidates should have experience at the journeyman level in industrial mechanics and electrical technology.

SKILLS:



_ good hand/eye coordination and dexterity to operate small tools.

_ ability to follow procedures, read maintenance manuals, read shop drawings and equipment drawings and write concise and accurate reports.

_ communication skills are important.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE:



_ knowledge of plant equipment and all the electrical and electronic control systems.

_ knowledge of company procedures with regards to part purchase and inventory control.

_ chemical mixing techniques.

_ chemical handling and waste treatment and waste handling gained through extensive WHMIS training.

SAFETY:



_ training in safe handling of chemicals and oils at the level required by WHMIS.

_ good housekeeping skills and material handling skills are required.

_ fork lift training is a requirement.

Job Type: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 3 months

Pay: $23.58-$26.18 per hour
