The Mines Health, Safety and Enforcement Division (MHSE) provides oversight of the mineral exploration and mining sector during all stages of mine projects. The division includes: the Office of the Chief Inspector of Mines; the Mine Audits and Strategic Services Branch; the Abandoned Mines Branch; the Regulatory Management and Enforcement Branch and the Code Review Secretariat. The Inspector of Mines positions are based in each of the six regional offices: Victoria, Prince George, Kamloops, Cranbrook, Vancouver and Smithers.

The Inspector of Mines is the ministry professional on mine safety and for ensuring compliance and enforcement of health and safety under the delegated authority of the Mines Act and the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines (HSR) in British Columbia. The position conducts investigations, inspections, audits, enforces actions for health and safety non-compliance, and provides expert advice.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s Degree or higher in Engineering or Geoscience (Mining, Civil, Environmental or Materials Science).
  • Registered, or immediately eligible* for registration, as a fully licensed professional with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area (Engineers and Geoscientists BC (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of British Columbia)). *Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a professional in another Canadian jurisdiction referred to above, and able to transfer that membership to a BC professional association within 6 months of employment. It is the responsibility of the applicant to have their qualifications reviewed by the appropriate body to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration.
  • Minimum of two years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in mining, minerals, natural resources, occupational health and safety, heavy industry or regulating heavy industry OR,
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience solving complex technical problems, interpreting and analyzing data related to mine safety management.
  • Experience in sub-surface investigations, construction of mines or related works and other aspects of mine safety hazard management.

Preference may be given to applicants with:
  • Mine rescue training and/or blasting experience.
  • Experience with underground mining.
  • Experience regulating health and safety.

Proviso:
  • May be required to occasionally work evenings and weekends and be exposed to incident scenes involving serious injuries and fatalities.
  • Must be willing to testify at hearings and trials.
  • Must be available to travel by air, fixed wing, helicopter and overnight on short notice.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, walk up and down steep ramps, work underground, use and be fitted for appropriate protective equipment in environments where exposure to chemical vapours, noise, dust, heat and cold are present.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License (or equivalent).
