Job Summary
Apprentice locksmiths will gain skills in locksmith work on door closures, panic hardware, and related fittings as it pertains to the installation, maintenance and repair of locks, keys lock cylinders for the master key system and maintains appropriate records.
The apprentice locksmith is expected to work on the installation, repair and replacement of door hardware, locks, key cutting, electric hardware, automatic door openers, and door hardware power supplies across the University.
This position operates within a structured trades learning environment. The successful candidate will be required to actively participate in a recognized training program to achieve technical qualification.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Manager of Operations and Infrastructure, with direct operational supervision provided by the Head and Sub-Head Locksmith.
Work Performed
Requests and obtains materials and equipment required for assigned work.
Keys lock cylinders for master key systems under the guidance of a qualified locksmith.
Repairs locks and closures in the shop and elsewhere on campus under supervision.
Maintain required records in accordance with established procedures.
Assists in the selection of hardware and keying for new buildings.
Cut keys as required, in accordance with established procedures.
Installs and maintains locks, door closures, panic hardware, and related fittings under supervision.
As required, assists with estimates and the preparation of inspection reports.
Ensures the workplace is safe and follows established safe work practices.
Assists with the installation and maintenance of 12/24 volt door operating equipment.
Communicates with customers as required to support the efficient delivery of service.
Performs other related duties as required, consistent with the qualifications and requirements of the position.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Determines the sequence of assigned tasks and selects work methods and tools under the guidance of a qualified locksmith, in accordance with departmental guidelines and established procedures; errors in judgement may result in minor service delays, additional costs, and/or temporary security vulnerabilities requiring corrective action.
Supervision Received
Performs assigned duties under general supervision and guidance, in accordance with approved procedures and oral and written instructions, within a structured apprenticeship training environment.

Preferred Qualifications
High school graduation. Valid or eligible for a Security Worker License. Valid BC Driver's Licence. Minimum of two years' experience in a construction and/or trades environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment. Practical experience using hand and power tools. Proficiency in the use of computers and standard software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office) is considered an asset. Willingness and ability to participate in and complete a structured apprenticeship training program.
