Position Summary:


This position is for candidates with expertise and understanding of the perspectives, challenges, and barriers faced by Veterans, who are willing to provide insight into the design and implementation of projects and initiatives aimed at serving this demographic based on their lived experiences, which includes personal lived experience and drawing from knowledge and observation of the broader community. The Lived Expertise, Veteran position is part of a robust lived experience team that collaborates with other Atlas team members and all Atlas portfolios, providing guidance and advice across projects.

Duties:

Provide strategic advice and insights to the Atlas Institute based on their lived expertise as a Veteran. Act as support and contributor for Lived Expertise Team-led projects and initiatives (ex. conferences, webinars, strategic planning, internal cultural awareness series. Share and actively maintain knowledge of Veteran, Veteran Family, and military specific resources, services and organizations with Atlas staff and stakeholders to inform day to day and project specific work. Act as project contributor in initiatives across organizational portfolios, including research, knowledge mobilization and communications projects, which may include resource/document review (ex. toolkits, social media campaigns, etc.), participation on project teams, and research participation. Support planning and execution of projects in collaboration with other Atlas portfolio staff. Support stakeholder engagement through planning, execution and follow up on related opportunities; such facilitating and maintaining community connections and attending associated meetings; including active participation in hosting activities to bring lived experience into the Atlas Institute. Present on the work of the Atlas Institute at conferences, meetings and other knowledge exchange opportunities. Support efforts to enhance the application of equity lens to all Atlas initiatives. Assist with the recruitment and support of Cadre or advisory members for projects. Demonstrated respect for and willingness to share on the understanding of the life experiences of Veterans, Veteran Families and people living with mental health problems and illnesses and of diverse populations and preferably experience working with people with first-hand experience of mental health problems/illnesses. Familiarity with strategic research and policy/practice issues pertinent to the Military and Veteran field in Canada. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to build rapport with others with diverse perspectives and backgrounds. Demonstrated success working in constantly changing and result-oriented environments, in interdisciplinary teams, and in partnerships with groups such as policy makers, researchers, advocates, and service providers. Ability to learn quickly and independently, to exercise good judgement and to demonstrate initiative. Strong writing ability and the capacity to communicate effectively for a variety of audiences. Experience with public speaking, group/meeting facilitation. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications:

Lived Experience as a Canadian Veteran, with a minimum of five years service with CAF or RCMP. Experience with teaching classes, delivering briefings, and writing short analysis of current events. Experience working with Military Veterans and Family members would be considered a strong asset. Track record and capacity to build positive relations with stakeholders and in collaborative approaches. Fluency in French and English would be considered a strong asset.

Working Conditions:

Working standard office hours with start and end time flexibility (20 hrs/week). Must be comfortable working in open space and virtual environments. Physical/cognitive demands include use of typical office equipment, prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer/telephone, high degree of concentration and attention to detail, capacity to learn and adapt to additional digital tools as required. Psychological demands include deadline drive requirements, capacity to organize and prioritize own work, and willingness to engage with sensitive and emotionally resonant topics related to the Veteran and Family community.
