The Opportunity
This position is part of the Nova Scotia team and reports to the Community Coordinator. The Literacy Program Facilitator works both independently and collaboratively to carry out and promote the work of United for Literacy. The position may involve a combination of remote work and travel to program sites or meetings, depending on the role.
During the 2026 winter school term, we will offer the following two programs in Eastern Kings:
1. One-on-One Reading Support at Greenwich Community Hall:
Individualized reading sessions designed to help children improve their reading fluency and comprehension. Delivered primarily by volunteer tutors, with the Literacy Program Facilitator providing coordination and tutoring support as needed.
2. Reading Circle (Storytime) at Kings County Family Resource Centre:
A weekly program of read-aloud stories and word games. Led and facilitated directly by the Literacy Program Facilitator (the position being hired).
Your Main Responsibilities and Major Duties
Under the supervision of the Community Coordinator, the Literacy Program Facilitator will play a key role in volunteer recruitment, program coordination, and direct program delivery.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
Coordinate and supervise program delivery at One-on-One Reading Support by:
Welcoming and orienting volunteers and participants
Taking attendance and managing schedules
Moderating noise levels and ensuring smooth flow of sessions
Reporting program progress to the Community Coordinator
Delivering tutoring sessions when volunteer availability is low
Plan and facilitate the weekly Reading Circle by:
Selecting age-appropriate storybooks
Designing and leading fun literacy-based activities
Reporting program progress to the Community Coordinator
Assist with volunteer recruitment and engagement by:
Promoting volunteer opportunities to university students and community members
Conducting background and reference checks
Coordinating orientation and training sessions
Maintaining regular communication with volunteers
Skills, Attributes and Requirements
Communication skills: Ability to clearly convey information and instructions, both verbally and in writing, to a diverse group of volunteers and participants
Organizational skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, keep track of schedules, and ensure that all program activities run smoothly
Interpersonal skills: Comfortable engaging with volunteers, children, and community members, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment
Flexibility to adjust to changing circumstances or unexpected challenges during program implementation
Passion for literacy and education: A genuine interest in making a positive impact on children's literacy and learning experiences
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite
Access to a car
Additional Assets (Preferred)
Experience delivering volunteer-run and community-based programs
Previous knowledge of and experience with United for Literacy
