Job Description

Position Purpose



The purpose of this position is to staff and safely operate YRP aircrafts. This pilot position will receive direct supervision from the Lead Rotary Pilot working in the unit, and would work alongside police tactical flight officers.

Major Duties & Responsibilities



Fly the aircraft safely and in accordance with Transport Canada regulations, YRP policies and procedure, and the aircraft flight manuals. File the proper flight plans with air traffic control. Monitor weather patterns using multiple aviation weather programs. Communicate with Air Traffic control and other aircraft to obtain flight clearances. Communicate with the TFO in a clear manner to allow for effective flight operations. Perform a walk around check of aircraft to make sure there are no defects and it is safe to fly. Conduct pre and post-flight inspections of fuel and equipment. Assume any responsibility delegated by the Lead Pilot or the ASU supervisor. Assist the ASU supervisor and Lead Pilot with hiring, assessing and training new pilots. Maintain own flight records and for the aircraft. Report flight and duty time to the Lead Pilot. Assist the ASU supervisor with all aspects of flight operations including forecasting budget costs. Monitor and coach new pilots. Exercise situational awareness of flight environment, location of other aircraft, terrain, navigation, communication, weather. Work alongside the Lead Aircraft Maintenance Engineer to promote safe aircraft operation. Maintain confidentiality of information. Maintain own flight records and for the aircraft. Report flight and duty time to the Lead Pilot. Deliver safety briefings to police members which may include technical information. Action and distribute accident, incident and other occurrence reports. Coordinate schedules amongst flight crew members. Maintain confidentiality of information.

Education, Licensing & Certifications



Transport Canada Commercial Pilot License is required. Hold a valid Transport Canada category one (1) medical certificate. Hold a restricted radio telephone operator's certificate.

Mandatory Experience



Minimum of 5 years of previous flight experience including 1000 hours of flying time on a rotary wing aircraft with 100 of those hours as "Pilot in Command". 100 hours of night flying time. No violations or insured losses within the previous five years.

Preferred Experience



100 or more hours of piloting an Airbus H125 within the previous 12 months. 250 or more hours flying time on a turbine engine rotary aircraft.

Skills



Problem solving abilities in order to determine technological solutions (i.e. data and weather tracking). Demonstrated knowledge of risk management involving flight operations. Demonstrated decision-making abilities and good judgement. Excellent organizational and planning skills. Ability to focus on the primary task and change focus when required. Communication and interpersonal skills to interact with the Operations Manager, Line Pilots, Maintenance Manager, Unit Supervisors, TFO, police aviation units, Transport Canada and NavCanada.

Additional Comments



The incumbent will be required to maintain a Transport Canada commercial pilot license and a category 1 medical as required by Transport Canada. Ability to report to other locations in the GTA. Ability to work both day and night shifts. Ability to be on stand by and return to duty when called. Incumbent may be required to travel outside of Canada.
