Elk Island Public Schools is recruiting a temporary part-time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Westboro Elementary.

This position would be caring for a student with a potentially life threatening condition. There could be the possibility of redeployment within the school on days when the student does not attend.



Westboro Elementary serves approximately 245 students in kindergarten to Grade 6, with 18 teaching staff and 16 support staff. The school is located in Sherwood Park, AB.

Commencing September 11, 2025

Ending June 22, 2026

9.75 hours per week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 3.25 hours per day)

Licensed Practical Nurse




As part of a classroom-based team, this position provides services for students who have medical conditions or major functional limitations. The incumbent attends to the medical and personal care needs of a student(s) in the classroom with severe disabilities, conditions, and disorders. The needs could include, but are not limited to, requirement for g-tube feeding, ostomy care, lifting, tracheostomy care, seizure monitoring, feeding, monitoring risk of choking, nasal/mouth suctioning and monitoring oxygen.


The LPN is an important member of the classroom multidisciplinary team and may also assist and support teachers with many instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom, school and community. Under the direction of the teacher, the LPN may assist a variety of students in acquiring basic academic skills necessary for the development of personal and educational goals in the classroom and school community. Instructional support may be provided in all curriculum areas, one-on-one or in small groups and in a variety of settings (fieldtrips, library, gym, playground, etc.)


Student Assistance and Personal/Medical Care:




Perform health care related tasks, such as monitoring vital signs, administering medication, G-tube and ostomy care Performs/assists student(s) with physical requirements, activities of daily living and personal care Assists and educates staff regarding medical conditions to ensure awareness amoung all stakeholders Evaluates, observes, reports and documents change in student(s) medical status and deviation from anticipated response Participate in case reviews, consult with the educational team, multi-disciplinary team and therapeutic specialists to evaluate the student's progress and services performed, report changes to the educational team Prepare and maintain records of the student's progress and services performed, report changes to the educational team Identify factors which have an effect on various types of health conditions (e.g., glucose control for the diabetic) and develop solutions. Provide input into the Individual Program Plan process with a focus on health and wellness Collect information and maintain medical logs and/or documentation Assists other students in the classroom when appropriate

Education and Experience:




Post-secondary education from an approved nursing education program with College of Licensed Practical Nurse of Alberta registration Minimum of three years of directly applicable experience or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:




Knowledge of ambulation aids; normal anatomy and physiology; deviations in anatomy and physiology due to developmental delays, illnesses and medical conditions Knowledge of how deviations in normal development affect behavioral, emotional and mental health (i.e. Downs Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy). Knowledge of instructional, training and coaching techniques Knowledge of Freedom of information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) legislation, principles and practices Knowledge of workplace safety and awareness of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations Understanding of district and departments operations and business; school systems and structures, community services for children and families, Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to understand non-verbal communication and behaviors Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical clients Strong needs assessment and analytical skills Good leadership skills and the ability to train, coach and mentor Educational Assistants Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make quick decisions Flexible with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment Ability to work with a wide variety of students with varied needs Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaborate with inter-disciplinary teams Willing and able to keep information about clients confidential Ability to use tact and judgement in dealing with difficult situations Responsible to provide proof of active registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLP NA) and to maintain registration throughout the duration of employment

Physical Demands:




May required to routinely lift items weighting up to 10 kilograms. Sometimes, heavier lifting may be required to help children move into and out of wheelchairs. May also use mechanical lifts for students.


Some of the unpleasant aspects of the work environment are:


Contact with infectious diseases Noise level Coregulating dysregulated students.

Working Conditions:




Because of the nature of the work the incumbent is constantly in contact with students which could result in exposure to viruses, bodily fluids, and contaminated medical equipment.
