The Opportunity: The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting for a permanent full-time Legislative Assistant. This position provides administrative support to the legislative functions of the Legal & Legislative Services Department. This position is responsible for providing a wide range of professional administrative duties under tight deadlines that require a high level of accuracy, confidentiality, and discretion. The primary focus of this position is Corporate Meetings which include Council Meetings, Committee of the Whole Meetings, Council Retreats, Council Orientation and Committee Meetings. The Legislative Assistant is a service focused individual who values being a team player. This position deals with politically sensitive issues, elected officials and senior management. As our preferred candidate, you will have:
Two-year diploma from a recognized school in legal assistant, office administration, business administration or equivalent
Two or more years of related Municipal Government experience
Extensive meeting management including agenda preparation, minute taking and providing procedural advice
Experience with bylaw processes including bylaw readings, basic structure of bylaws, processes to amend and consolidate bylaws
Knowledge of procedures, policies, bylaws, Municipal Government Act and political systems
Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Knowledge of Robert\xe2\x80\x99s Rules of Order
Experience working with audio and visual equipment in meeting environments
Certified Assessment Review Board Clerk and Subdivision & Development Appeal Board Clerk, or ability to obtain
Commissioner for Oaths, or ability to obtain
Demonstrated proficiency and working independently and prioritizing responsibilities and workload efficiently
Demonstrated ability to manage all tasks and meet deadlines consistently
Demonstrated ability to support leaders and teams and anticipate their needs
Ability to develop minutes, resolutions and correspondence that are accurate and reflect discussions
Demonstrate political acumen
Ability to be self-reflective and identify areas for improvement
Excellent customer service and public relations skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to learn new software systems easily
Ability to focus on completing tasks with frequent interruptions
Affiliation: Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 417 Remuneration: $33.18 to $34.92 per hour Hours of Work: 75 hours biweekly; Monday to Friday; some evening and weekend work may be required when needed.
