Reporting to the Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay-Rainy River, Marcus Powlowski, the Legislative Assistant is responsible for conducting research, analyzing legislation and policy issues, drafting communications materials, and managing communications and outreach initiatives. This role supports the Member's parliamentary, committee, and constituency responsibilities, ensuring the Member is well-prepared and effectively represented in all forums.

Duties and Responsibilities



Researches data, legislation, jurisprudence, and policy proposals to identify key elements, impacts, and issues of concern for the Member or relevant committees. Prepares comprehensive reports, committee briefings, notes, and summaries on matters of parliamentary or political interest. Drafts speeches, presentations, press releases, correspondence, and communications materials, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with the Member's priorities. Coordinates with the Chief of Staff to maintain and update the Member's schedule with key committee and parliamentary dates. Serves as the primary liaison with the Government House Leader's Office and Whip's Office regarding committee matters. Manages major policy-related constituent inquiries and contributes to the drafting of newsletters and constituency mail-outs. Creates and manages social media content, including posts and videos across multiple platforms to enhance outreach and engagement. Monitors parliamentary proceedings, government announcements, and media coverage to identify relevant issues and opportunities for response.
Represents the Member's office at committee, political party or other meetings to ensure the Member is kept apprised of developments that may have an impact on their work.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



Strong research and analytical skills; ability to synthesize complex information into clear, actionable advice. Superior written and verbal communication skills, with a deep understanding of political and legislative processes. Knowledge of communications principles, media relations, and social media strategy.
Extensive knowledge of the political environment and legislative process.

Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and maintain confidentiality in a high-pressure setting. Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills with sound judgment and discretion. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital communications tools.

Education and Experience



Experience working in an office setting providing research, communications, and legislative support. University degree or post-secondary education from a recognized institution in political science or a related field, combined with experience working with senior management OR an acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience.

Working Conditions:



Security clearance: the successful applicant must be eligible for and receive a valid security clearance. Location: In-person (position may be hybrid when the House is not sitting). Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours/week). Some evening and weekend work required. Pay: Salary will be commensurate to qualifications and experience. Three-month probation period at start of position
