The Opportunity

Make a meaningful impact as the Legislative and Communications Coordinator with the City of Wetaskiwin! This position is responsible for assisting the organization with provisions of corporate, legal, and legislative and communications services. In tandem with the Legislative and Records Management Coordinator, this position will support Council and Committee meeting management, and agenda and minutes administration. You will assist with information requests and inquiries, the Municipal Election and Census, and will provide administrative support to communications as required.



Responsibilities



Council and Committee Support

Clerk Council and Committee meetings. Prepare agendas and relevant background materials for City Council, Committees, and other assigned meetings; provide support by recording meeting minutes and processing business arising from Council and Committee meetings. Ensure Formal Information Request (FRI) and Budget Information Requests (BRI) are tracked and assigned following Council, Committee, and Budget meetings. Other duties as assigned.

Communication Support

Draft legislative required communications and advertisements as required. Draft press releases and post-council meeting highlights, and internal memos. Update the City's website, engagement platforms, and internal staff portal. Other duties as assigned.

Legislative Priorities, Project Support, and Quasi-Judicial Boards Support

Assist with projects, including elections and census. Maintain clerk training and clerk quasi-judicial hearings, including accepting complaints and appeals, and schedule hearings and compile hearing packages.

Education, Qualifications and Work Experience



A Diploma or undergraduate degree in paralegal studies, business, local government, or public policy or administration. A minimum of three years of experience working in a comparable position, preferably in a municipal government environment. Subdivision and Development Appeal Board Clerk certification is an asset. Assessment Review Board certification is an asset. Completion of, or working towards, NACLAA level 1 certification is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



Strong computer and organizational skills including knowledge of electronic records systems, knowledge of SharePoint is considered an asset. Knowledge, understanding, or familiarity of legal or legislative frameworks or practices. Possess an aptitude for managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Above average verbal and written communication skills. Proven ability to communicate firmly and diplomatically with the public and respond courteously to complaints and difficult customers. Possess excellent time management skills. Possess a calm and professional demeanor, coupled with a strong intuition for dealing with people. Able to work with confidential and sensitive information and issues. Commitment to continuous improvement and excellent customer service.

Physical Effort and Safety Commitment



Standing, walking, stairs, kneeling, manual dexterity, visual acuity, lifting up to 30 lbs. Pushing and pulling of supplies and sitting for long periods of time. The employee is responsible for full cooperation with all aspects of the City's Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) program, including compliance with all rules and regulations, and for continually practicing safety while performing duties, and monitor and enforce subordinate compliance with the OH&S program.
