COMPANY OVERVIEW
Calgary Legal Guidance (CLG) plays an important role in Alberta's Justice Sector and increases access to justice through free legal advice services and specialized legal support to thousands of people every year. Our clients are some of Calgary's most vulnerable and marginalized people, and they are particularly susceptible to experiencing the most significant barriers to access to justice. As a non-profit organization, CLG offers a wide range of legal support services that address gaps not covered by Legal Aid Alberta including Short Term Legal Advice Services; Poverty Law Services; Homeless Outreach; Elder Law; Social Benefits Advocacy; Immigration Law; Indigenous access to justice; Family Law, and Sexual Violence Survivor Legal Support.
THE ROLE
The Legal Services Specialist plays a key role in ensuring individuals seeking legal help receive the right level of service, support, or referral. This position is responsible for triage of individuals and assessment of eligibility, understanding the individual's goals, and determining next steps -- whether that's booking into a summary legal advice clinic, connecting to in-house specialized legal programs, or referring to trusted community partners.
This is a regular full-time position working 35 hours per week. Working as part of an integrated legal services team, this role combines empathy and efficiency in a fast-paced, high-volume setting. Successful candidates are skilled in triage, client assessment, system navigation, and can handle sensitive topics with professionalism, compassion, and cultural awareness. Specializing in community resources and government systems, the Legal Services Specialist guides individuals through complex systems and provides individuals with accurate information and referrals. While understanding CLG partnerships as well as the boundaries of law and advocacy, the Legal Services Specialist works in a collaborative environment to enhance the quality of service to all individuals accessing support from CLG.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Conduct assessments virtually and in-person using CLG financial and program eligibility criteria
Identify legal and non-legal issues, and determine appropriate next steps
Schedule and manage appointments for legal advice clinics
Refer individuals to internal programs or external community services
Document and maintain intake and service data accurately
Collaborate with volunteer lawyers and CLG staff
trauma-informed and culturally responsive service principles
Demonstrate a commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and ability to collaborate with Indigenous program staff to support the unique needs of Indigenous people accessing CLG
Contribute to a respectful, team-oriented, and client-centered environment
Produce statistical reports
Collaborate with external agencies and community service providers
Follow established procedures, workflows and best practices
Comply with confidentiality and privacy policies

The preferred candidate possesses the following skills, experience and qualifications:
Post-secondary education in human services, social work, law, or related field (equivalent experience may be considered)
2+ years' experience working with diverse and/or populations experiencing vulnerable circumstances
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to engage with clients who have complex needs and may present in times of crisis
Familiarity with legal systems, terminology, or advocacy processes
Demonstrated ability to manage emotionally sensitive or complex client situations
Proficient in computer systems and client data tracking
Experience in a legal or community services environment
Knowledge of trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and de-escalation
Training in suicide prevention or conflict resolution
Ability to work independently and with team members
Displays a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Multilingual or cross-cultural communication skills is a definite asset
Exhibits a dedication to upholding the principles of access to justice
Proven commitment to delivering high-quality client service
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Strong communications skills both verbal and written
WHAT WE OFFER
Salary range is $50,000 - $58,000 per annum and will be commensurate with experience. A comprehensive benefits package is also provided.
