Job Description


The Fountain School of Performing Arts (FSPA) at Dalhousie University invites applications for a ten-month (100% FTE) limited-term appointment in Music Theory, at the rank of Lecturer/Assistant Professor, commencing August 1, 2024. The position is subject to budgetary approval.

The successful candidate\'s duties may include but are not limited to the teaching of six one-semester courses. The candidate will teach from a selection of the following music theory courses: - MUSC 1221.03: Music Theory 1a;
- MUSC 1222.03: Music Theory 1b;
- MUSC 2221.03: Music Theory 2a;
- MUSC 2222.03: Music Theory 2b;
- MUSC 3221.03: Form and analysis; and
- MUSC 3282.03: Orchestration.
As well, the candidate may teach (depending on their profile) a selection of the following courses:
- MUSC 2020.03: The History of Jazz;
- MUSC/FILM 2016.03: Topics in Music and Cinema;
- A graduate seminar on a topic chosen by the candidate in consultation with the department; or a large enrolment class (max. 125 students) on a topic chosen by the candidate.

The candidate will also be expected to contribute to administrative service within the Fountain School of Performing Arts.

The minimum qualifications required for this position are a Doctoral degree in Music Theory and/or Musicology (including ABD), an active research profile, and evidence of effective teaching in music theory at the post-secondary level. Applications will include a curriculum vitae, a statement of research and teaching interests and philosophies, and evidence of teaching effectiveness (formal course evaluations).
