Position Title / Rank: Assistant Professor in Studio Art, PaintingDepartment: School of Fine Arts and MusicPosition Description:The School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Studio Art with expertise in painting and contemporary art. The candidate will be appointed to the School of Fine Art and Music (SOFAM) and teach in our undergraduate BA in Studio Art program and our Masters of Fine Art program. The Studio Art program within the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph has a reputation for excellence in the education of artists at the undergraduate and graduate levels. A crucial part of our teaching is in our MFA program. The professional achievement in recent years of MFA alumni from the University of Guelph is unmatched by any other institution in Canada. The anticipated start date for this appointment is July 1, 2025, or another mutually agreed-upon date in 2025.The successful candidate will hold an MFA or an MA (or equivalent professional experience and an undergraduate degree) in Studio Art. Candidates must provide evidence of strong external recognition by the artistic community through exhibitions, group shows, awards or prizes, publications, criticism, and/or artist projects/initiatives. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active professional art practice, supervise students within the Master of Fine Art program, and participate fully in departmental service roles.The painting curriculum at the University of Guelph features a strong basis in representational work. Intermediate classes integrate a consideration of digital imagery and technology as they relate to painting practices in terms of both thematic content and production. Teaching in upper-level BA Studio Art classes supports students' development of independent work. Familiarity with studio teaching consistent with this curriculum will be a significant asset. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate at least two years of successful teaching experience in painting at the postsecondary level.In the School of Fine Art and Music, we value diversity and inclusivity.
