12-month Lecturer Position \xe2\x80\x93 Creative Writing

The Department of Creative Studies in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies

at the University of British Columbia\xe2\x80\x99s Okanagan Campus invites applications for a full-time 12-month term Lecturer appointment in Creative Writing commencing September 2023. The position has responsibilities in teaching and service, and hiring decisions will be made based on the candidate\xe2\x80\x99s potential to achieve excellence in these areas. UBC\xe2\x80\x99s Okanagan campus is situated in Kelowna on the ancestral, traditional, and unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan people who continue their thousands of years of stewardship today. Lecturer positions are appointments without review (i.e., non-tenure track) with the possibility of renewal for successive terms, subject to availability of funding and demonstration of excellence in teaching in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association.

Eligibility and duties

The ideal candidate will be a practicing writer with relevant university teaching experience and must hold a Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree (MA or MFA) or Ph.D. in Creative Writing or a related field. The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • teach existing courses within the undergraduate and graduate programs, and
  • provide service to the University and the community.
Preference will be given to candidates with strong teaching ability in narrative forms, including short- and long-form fiction, playwriting and screenwriting.

Position

The candidate will be expected to teach seven courses over the 12-month period, with a minimum of one of those being taught in the summer term. Courses for the position would include, but are not limited to include:
  • CRWR 160 (Intro to Writing Fiction and Drama)
  • CRWR 380 (Writing of the Short Story)
  • CRWR 471 (Writing of the Novel)
  • CRWR 160 (Intro to Writing Fiction and Drama)
  • CRWR 260 (Theory and Practice of Creative Writing)
  • CRWR 471 (Writing of the Novel)
  • CRWR 160
We are seeking candidates who have experience teaching in these areas and whose interests will complement and supplement those of our current instructors. Lecturers in the School are also expected to provide service to the Faculty and university. This could include participating in committees, supporting student clubs, and engaging in other activities to serve the campus community.
