Position Overview:
Sustainabuild is seeking a Structural Engineer to join our management team and lead the structural design process for modular and panelized residential construction. This role is responsible for transforming preliminary architectural drawings into complete engineered structural plan packages ready for permitting and construction.
Using design software's, such as MiTek (or similar) as the primary platform (and related analysis tools), the Structural Engineer will oversee the full workflow from architectural prelims through structural analysis, drafting, estimating, and engineered plan production. The role also integrates SEMA panelization for CNC-ready outputs and fabrication workflows to automated equipment.
This is both a hands-on technical role and a leadership position within Sustainabuild's management team, with responsibilities that may include supervising drafting staff, setting design standards, coordinating across disciplines, and ensuring projects are structurally optimized, code-compliant, cost-efficient, and fabrication-ready. The Structural Engineer will also contribute to the company's long-term strategic growth by developing scalable structural systems and workflows that align with Sustainabuild's mission to deliver high-performance, panelized housing across Atlantic Canada.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Design & Engineering
Lead all structural modeling for foundations, walls, floors, and roof systems.
Apply NBCC/CSA code criteria (snow, wind, seismic for PEI) to define load paths and assemblies.
Run structural calculations for trusses, joists, and engineered wood products.
Liaise with software companies on staff engineers for sealed truss/joist packages, and/or apply own P.Eng stamp where applicable.
Develop and maintain structural design libraries for repeatable building types (single family, duplex, 4-plex, townhouse, multi-storey etc).
Workflow & Integration Management
Manage the concept ? preliminary architectural ? Structural ? estimating ? SEMA panelization workflow.
Ensure structural models are the single source of truth for structural decisions.
Oversee export/import workflows with SEMA for panelization, CNC cut files, and shop tickets.
Minimize redraws by aligning structural system outputs with panel shop requirements.
Estimating & Cost Control
Utilize software and models to produce BOMs, material takeoffs, and cost estimates.
Coordinate with procurement and project management to validate supplier pricing and quantities.
Support integration of costing and quantities with production team and manufacturing
Quality Assurance & Compliance
Review and sign off on structural drawing packages for permit and IFC (Issued for Construction).
Validate structural software outputs to integrate with global building design (shear walls, lateral systems, foundations).
Ensure alignment with NBCC 2025, CSA A277, and local PEI building code.
Coordinate with external engineers and architects as required
Team Leadership & Coordination
Supervise and mentor drafting/design staff (Mitek, SEMA, Revit, AutoCAD etc).
Train staff on best practices for structural modeling and panelization workflows.
Act as the engineering lead in cross-functional meetings (architecture, panel shop, site crews).
Establish design standards, workflow processes, and quality control measures.
Required Qualifications
Licensed P.Eng (Structural) in Canada, or eligible for registration in PEI.
3+ years of structural engineering experience in wood-frame, timber, or light construction.
Proficiency with MiTek software (or equivalent) a preferred asset
Familiarity with SEMA for panelization and CNC preparation.
Working knowledge of Revit/AutoCAD for integration with MiTek and drafting coordination.
Strong understanding of NBCC and CSA standards for residential construction.
Demonstrated leadership, communication, and project management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Hundegger, Weinmann, or other CNC panel production systems.
Experience in off-site/modular housing delivery models.
Proven record of mentoring and developing technical staff.

Work Environment
Head Office: Office setting located in Summerside (Primary Location)
Factory: Indoor environment with exposure to tools, machinery, and equipment
On-Site: Outdoor construction sites with exposure to varying weather, dust, and noise.
