. This hands-on role involves supervising a team, managing parts and inventory, and ensuring efficient and accurate builds of trucks, trailers, and custom vehicles. Welding may be required occasionally, but the primary focus is on mechanical assembly, structural fitting, and parts coordination.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and coordinate the daily activities of the fabrication and assembly team.
Assemble heavy-duty truck bodies, chassis components, hydraulic systems, and accessories according to blueprints and build sheets.
Fit parts and sub-assemblies with precision using mechanical fasteners, torqueing tools, and fabrication techniques.
Oversee and maintain parts inventory, including receiving, organizing, and tracking components for each project.
Work closely with purchasing to flag low stock or missing items and ensure timely parts availability.
Ensure that assemblies meet quality standards, functional requirements, and safety regulations.
Maintain clear and accurate build documentation and inventory records.
Train and mentor new team members on assembly techniques, shop safety, and workflow processes.
Collaborate with engineering and production teams to troubleshoot build issues or adjust for design changes.
Maintain a clean, organized work area and enforce shop safety procedures.
Requirements:
5+ years of experience in heavy-duty vehicle assembly, fitting, or related mechanical trades.
Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, build sheets, and technical manuals.
Proven leadership or supervisory experience in a shop or production environment.
Experience with basic fabrication tools (saws, drills, grinders), torque tools, and lifting equipment.
Familiarity with hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems integration is an asset.
Experience with inventory management systems and parts control.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Able to lift and position large components and work in a physically demanding setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
Forklift or overhead crane certification.
Experience using ERP or inventory software.
Mechanical or trade certification (e.g., Heavy Equipment Technician, Automotive Service Tech, etc.) is an asset.
Valid driver's license; commercial license is a bonus.
