Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations. Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electrocobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution center for finished nickel products. Our Team: The Mines Technical Services Team is integral for employee safety and providing mine engineering support to Vale\'s producing mining operations. Members of this team work collaboratively to support mine sites engineering needs including surveying, ventilation, ground control, and short to mid-range mine planning is completed in accordance with the mine\'s needs while maintaining a high standard of safety and productivity. Team members are also involved in the development of process improvement initiatives, practices and procedures in co-operating with other support groups and the mine operations team. The Opportunity We are currently seeking a Lead Engineer Ground Control to join our Copper Cliff Mine Complex in Sudbury, Ontario. This is a permanent position. The Lead Engineer, Ground Control supports mine execution of the Ground Control Program and Seismic Risk Management Plans in Vale\'s Copper Cliff Mine Complex. This role oversees all aspects of ground control duties at our underground operations. The role holder works with an effective ground control team, including Ground Control Engineers, Mine Technician/Technologists and/or Engineers in Training, to provide Ground Control Services to the mine operations. Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Recommend actions to ensure that the safety and stability of mine excavations are maintained with respect to geotechnical, Vale\'s policies/standards and legislated requirements.
  • Update Mine Design Package on an annual basis with inputs from various departments at a mine site.
  • Provide day-to-day technical support and coordination for managing the site-specific Ground Control and Seismic Risk Management Programs, and work closely with the technical execution teams at the mine sites.
  • Assist the Chief Mine Engineer at the mine operation to conduct geo-mechanical risk assessment of the annual mine execution plans to ensure that mining sequence and mine layouts are optimized to reduce the risk to safety and production.
  • Integrate the long-range Ground Control and Seismic Risk Management Plans into the 3-24 month mine execution plan at the mine site.
  • Integrate the 0-24-month Ground Control Plan into the 0-3-month mine execution plan.
  • Develop and manage site-specific ground support design / standards and ground support quality control programs.
  • Lead technical investigations of major ground instability incidents to prevent re-occurrence at the mine site.
  • Participate in Ground Control audits and reviews, including Geotechnical Review Board (GRB) and Integrated Operations Assessment (IOA)), and work with other stakeholders to develop action plans to address recommendations.
  • Integrate with Numerical Modelling/Geomechanics Studies & Design, involving mining methods, stope and pillar design and mining sequencing, to support mine site Ground Control strategy.
  • Develop site specific field instrumentation program, including micro seismic system, to monitor ground behavior with the progress of mining.
  • Provide training and mentoring to foster skills and competencies of the Ground Control team at the mine site.
  • Provide on-call duties if required for technical assistance with ground stability issues.
  • Underground mine design, mine engineering, ground control, scheduling, and high level of understanding of underground mining activities.
  • Knowledge of Rock Mechanics modeling software (MAP3D, Rocscience programs and FLAC3D).
  • Ground control instrumentation knowledge.
  • Strong communication skills and development of concise documents and presentation materials.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Must be skilled in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Takes initiative and can self-direct to accomplish goals with minimum supervision.
About You
  • Undergraduate degree in Mining Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering Designation Required \xe2\x80\x93 P.Eng.
  • You have a minimum of 5+ year\'s experience in a technical role in a mining operations environment with experience working in Ground Control obtained at seismically active mines is preferred.
  • Underground mine design, mine engineering, ground control, scheduling, and high level of understanding of underground mining activities.
  • Knowledge of Rock Mechanics modeling software (MAP3D, Rocscience programs and FLAC3D).
  • Ground control instrumentation knowledge.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Must be skilled in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Takes initiative and can self-direct to accomplish goals with minimum supervision.
