Law Clerk/legal Assistant

Burlington, ON, CA, Canada

Job Description

Overview

Established in 1890, Cleaver & Company LLP (as we're now known) is Burlington's oldest law firm by name. That being said, we're not your typical stuffy lawyers - we're a partnership of likeminded individuals who approach the practice of law with empathy and a focus on our clients. If you're passionate about the law but value a boutique employment environment, we'd love to meet you.

We are currently seeking a

skilled, competent, and trustworthy law clerk/legal assistant

to join our team. If successful, you will play a crucial role in supporting our two lawyers, Tim O'Driscoll and Chris Harrison, in handling a variety of legal matters (with an emphasis on estates matters), as well as handling our day-to-day administrative needs.

Prerequisites & Skills

Completion of a recognized

Law Clerk/Legal Assistant diploma or certificate program

(with courses in real estate, estates, and corporate law) is a prerequisite. We would encourage you to apply if you have strong organizational skills, a fine attention to detail, and most importantly, a desire to learn - if successful, you will be offered substantial mentoring and exposure to a variety of work and responsibilities.

Ideally, you'll also have experience and/or skills in the following areas:

working knowledge of Estateably/Bequest, PDF editing programs, Zoom, Dropbox, CosmoLex and Microsoft Office; understanding of the Estates Administration Guide and probate application process; strong written and oral communication skills; strong organizational, multi tasking, and time management skills; attention to detail with excellent proofreading skills; and ability to think critically and solve problems as they arise.

Tasks & Duties

Our office is located in the heart of beautiful downtown Burlington, and we therefore

work in-person at the office 5 days per week.

The successful candidate would be generally responsible for the following tasks and duties:

assisting with the preparation, drafting, and proofreading of Wills, probate applications, correspondence, reporting letters, and other legal documents; coordinating and scheduling meetings for our lawyers and welcoming clients to our office; managing the lawyers' calendars, including diarizing deadlines; assisting with email review and processing, maintaining and organizing electronic and hard copy files, and ensuring all relevant documents are accurately filed and easily accessible; opening and managing estate files, preparing probate applications, communicating with beneficiaries and institutions, and overseeing files through to completion; communicating with clients, other lawyers, court personnel, and financial institutions professionally and efficiently; and performing legal administrative tasks, including opening files in CosmoLex (and real estate files in Lawyer Done Deal), answering the office telephone as required.

What We Offer

We offer a supportive and flexible work environment, with salary commensurate with experience and the potential for increases based on performance. We value hard work, initiative, and a commitment to client service, and are proud to provide a positive and understanding workplace as a team.

We thank you in advance for your application and will contact you if you have been selected for an interview.
