Job Summary


Reporting to the Manager, Risk and Insurance Services, the Law Clerk will be responsible for providing paralegal support to the Risk and Insurance Services unit with the insurance compliance program, including contract review and documentation review, Regional insurance programs, litigation support, and policy matters.

Duties & Responsibilities


  • Provides a full range of paralegal support to the Risk and Insurance Services unit with an emphasis on the insurance compliance program, including contract review and documentation review, Regional insurance programs, litigation support, and policy matters.
  • Provides support to Regional staff in connection with program responsibilities, liability and risks.
  • Researches and assists with the preparation of legal opinions and reports to Regional Council.
  • Provides computer assisted legal research services.
  • Develop and update policies and procedures aimed at mitigating risk and provide training to Regional staff.
  • Performs general office administrative duties to support the Risk and Insurance Services unit, including correspondence and file management and keeps up-to-date on technical information in the legal field.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Skills & Qualifications


Essential
  • A secondary school diploma and completion of a recognized Law Clerks accreditation program.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • High level of accuracy and organizational skills.
  • Ability to research and apply provincial statutes and municipal by-laws relative to the activities of the position.

Preferred
  • Experience in a law office, insurance/risk management or municipal government environment with a practice emphasis on any or all of insurance/risk management, insurance litigation, contract law, administrative law, and municipal law and policies.
  • Completion or willingness to complete a General Insurance Essentials (GIE) certificate.
  • Completion or willingness to complete the following Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) courses through the Insurance Institute of Ontario: Principles and Practice of Insurance, Insurance on Property, Insurance Against Liability-Part 1, and Automobile Insurance-Part 1.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
