Description
Reporting to the Senior Risk Manager, Legal & Compliance, the Law Clerk will support the legal department with a wide range of real estate litigation, corporate, and compliance matters. This opportunity is a full-time 12 to 14-month role.
What\xe2\x80\x99s Involved

Real Estate Litigation 80%

  • Manage incoming violations, notices and complaints from RECO (Real Estate Council of Ontario), various Real Estate Boards across the GTA, CRTC investigations and other regulatory compliance matters; review, compile evidence, draft and submit documents before administrative tribunals in a timely manner.
  • Liaise professionally with insurance adjusters, legal professionals and agents on all court related matters.
  • Gather and prepare evidence, assist in the drafting, filing and serving court pleadings.
  • Provide support in the preparation, coordination and attendance at hearings, discoveries, settlement conferences and trials.
  • Prepare correspondence and legal documents according to pre-approved templates.
  • Assist in the management of corporate compliance agenda and policies, risk management, compile and report money laundering activities to FINTRAC.
  • Proficient in utilizing a tickler system, tracking open file matters, and general management of legal files.
  • Knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure, Small Claims Court procedures, FINTRAC guidelines, RECO regulations TRREB rules and bylaws and REBBA, 2002.
  • Research and draft various subject contents for videos, monthly presentations, email notices, and training modules.
  • Research and remain abreast of changes to statutes, rules and regulations within the real estate industry, and report such changes to the legal team and all departments affected by these changes.

Corporate 20%
  • Assist external counsel with corporate reorganizations, amalgamations and dissolutions by drafting and filing corporate organizational documents.
  • Maintain and continuously update minute book documentation, shareholders registers, ledgers, corporate structure charts etc. for all entities.
  • Prepare and file annual returns; conduct business name searches for availability and corporate profile searches.
  • Working knowledge of corporate registry systems, including PPSA and eCore.
  • Have full knowledge of the corporate charter documents and records to ensure compliance with governing statutes.

Talent Specs
  • 3+ years of experience working at law firms as a Law Clerk in civil litigation and corporate law
  • 2 + years of real estate, compliance and corporate experience is an asset
  • Completion of law clerk program recognized by the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario
  • Able to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
  • Excellent organizational, attention to detail and analytical skills
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • Able to work well under pressure, manage multiple tasks, and take ownership in supporting the team
  • Must possess excellent research skills with an eagerness to roll up their sleeves and willingness to dive into this exciting new role.
