Position Status: FULL-TIME (37.5 HOURS PER WEEK)
The Language Revitalization Specialist (the specialist) is a member of the language department team at the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Tribal Council (GTC). The position is responsible for promoting, coordinating, and implementing Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in language revitalization projects and initiatives aimed at reclaiming, revitalizing, and maintaining Dinjii Zhuh K\xe2\x80\x99yuu- which is the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in language.
Role Responsibilities

  • Prepares, manages, and supports Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in language revitalization and maintenance strategies and programs.
  • Responsible for the management of Community-Based Language Coordinators
  • Works collaboratively with key language partners including Elders, community leaders, language teachers, language champions, and Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Participants.
  • Organizes professional development opportunities for GTC staff, Designation Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Organizations (DGOs) staff, language nest staff, and Indigenous Language Educators in schools within the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Settlement Area (GSA).
  • Sets priorities and develops annual work plans in collaboration with Community-based Language Coordinators.
  • Works with key language partners to create, standardize, and distribute Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Language curriculum, materials, and resources for Participants.
  • Supports language instructors within and outside the education system to advance regional language educations goals.
  • Shares resources and collaborates closely with Language Instructors in the GSA schools, Early Childhood Centres and Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in language immersion programs.
  • Ensures that resources and documentation are maintained for fiscal, operational and historical purposes.

Role Qualifications and Competencies Requirements
  • A post-secondary and/or university degree in language revitalization or a related field.
  • Five years of related experience, including language maintenance and revitalization strategies, material and curriculum development, project management, program delivery, and mentoring staff.
  • Experience working with an Indigenous Nation or organization will be highly valued.
  • Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License.
  • Ability to effectively manage, motivate and build the capacity of staff.
  • Cross-cultural experience and is sensitive to issues of inclusion and can implement programs related to workplace diversity.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Participants and have experience working in the non-profit sector or in an Indigenous Government/Organization, preferably in a northern context.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills for dealing with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Travel, including to remote communities within the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Settlement Area of the Northwest Territories, will be required.
  • Preferred knowledge of Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in values, beliefs, and practices, and able to represent these in their daily work.
  • Fluency in the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in language is a definite asset.

A competitive salary and an additional benefits package will be offered including a northern allowance, health and dental benefits, and generous leave entitlements.
