Reporting to the Parks Services Foreman, the Labourer I position performs a wide variety of work functions within the Parks Business Unit under the Public Works Department. The position uses safe work practices and procedures to carry out assigned tasks and contributes to the overall effectiveness of the work team.
Responsibilities
include, but are not limited to:
Operation of light and medium duty equipment in a safe and efficient manner used in the maintenance of parks, trails, sidewalks and open spaces.
Turf grass maintenance.
Line trimming.
Planting and caring of annual flower and shrub beds.
Litter control.
Weed control.
Pruning of trees and shrubs.
Watering of plant material.
Minor repairs to parks amenities.
Ensure that all rules and regulations pertaining to parks and facilities are adhered to.
Maintain positive public relations and provide assistance and information services to user groups and public.
Qualifications
The successful candidates will have a Class 5 Operator's License. Previous related experience working with tools and equipment such as grounds maintenance equipment and light duty vehicles is required. Must have working knowledge and experience of hand operated tools, facility equipment and communication devices, such as two-way radios. Good organizational and excellent customer service skills, with the ability to adapt to emerging situations and changing priorities are essential. This is a physically demanding position; incumbents will be required to work in a variety of adverse weather conditions. This position requires your commitment for the duration of the season.
This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. A current Driver's Abstract will be required at the time of interview.
Hours of Work and Duration (there are 3 different shifts for this position):
April 13, 2026 - August 28, 2026 (Mon-Fri, 8-hr/day)
April 27, 2026 - August 28, 2026 (Mon-Fri, 8-hr/day)
April 29, 2026 - September 14, 2026 (Fri-Mon, 10-hr/day)
