This position is a part of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).

Location
- This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
The research assistant will provide assistance to the Principal Investigator (PI) and after consultation with the PI also other laboratory members with ongoing research projects. This includes reagent preparation. In addition, the person that fills this position will perform routine lab maintenance duties, order laboratory supplies and equipment, maintain radioactive material inventory, ensure conformity to radiation and biohazard safety regulations. The laboratory technician will train new students on cell culture and microbiology techniques.

Laboratory maintenance duties (80%):
Lab cleaning and dish washing
Autoclaving
Ordering laboratory supplies and equipment
Maintenance of cell culture stocks (thawing and freezing cell lines, culturing mammalian cels)
Maintenance of chemical inventory
Maintenance of radioactive inventory
Maintenance of equipment
Keep up to date on environmental health and safety requirements for chemical, biological and radiation safety
Chemical, biological, and radioactive waste management
Assistance with research projects (20%):
Preparation of reagents (e.g., buffers, bacteria broth and ampicillin agar plates, plasmid preparations)
Shipping of experimental samples to collaborators
Post-secondary Diploma in a related field preferred.
At least 6 months of experience in a health science research lab at the University of Alberta (knowledge of waste management and supplynet).
Computer proficiency using MS Office applications (Word, Excel).
Strong organizational and time management skills with demonstrated problem-solving and multi-tasking abilities
Strong interpersonal skills and verbal / written communication skills
Strong attention to detail and high levels of accuracy are required
