. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) Calgary Site Research Coordinator under the direction of the Local Site Principal Investigator.
Following established standard operating procedures, the medical laboratory assistant will be responsible for obtaining and processing blood and urine specimens collected from research subjects participating in the CLSA.
Recurring Part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.
Summary of Key Responsibilities
(job functions include but are not limited to):
Performs venipuncture and processing blood samples for the CLSA study
Labels all samples collected in accordance with standard laboratory procedures
Aware of laboratory safety procedures and act appropriately and quickly as required (i.e., dealing with needle stick injuries or spills within lab area)
Uses confidential information appropriately and maintains the confidentiality and security of all information related to research subjects
Stores, transports and disposes of biological and other hazardous materials according to guidelines; records information as required
Operates, maintains, and performs troubleshooting on laboratory instruments and equipment
Performs quality control and quality assurance activities, follows policies and procedures to ensure the privacy and safety of participants, co-workers, and self
Uses personal protective equipment appropriately, and identifies and reports unsafe conditions
May be asked to cross-train in research assistant duties (physical measures and questionnaire completion) to help support operational needs should the opportunity arise, and employee is willing to learn
As the laboratory requirements are very specific, it is imperative that work is done precisely and carried out in accordance with CLSA standard laboratory procedures
Obtaining and processing blood and urine specimens collected on research subjects participating in the study
Daily/Monthly/Weekly QC of laboratory equipment
Maintains cleanliness of laboratory area and sterilization of equipment
Maintains the confidentiality and security of all information related to research subjects
Qualifications / Requirements:
Graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory Assistant program (required)
Registration in the Alberta College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (required)
Must possess strong organizational skills and effective communication skills
Excellent time management, accuracy and attention to detail
Proficiency in computer skills (email, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power-point, Outlook, web-based data/lab management software)
Research experience would be considered an asset
TDG and GCP training would be considered an asset
