Laboratory Technician, Chemical and Biological Engineering

Primary Purpose: The primary purpose of this position is to provide analytical support services to the Catalysis and Chemical Reaction Engineering Laboratories in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering instrumentation laboratory. This position also provides instrument training to the personnel in the team.

Nature of Work: The Research Technician reports directly to Professor Ajay Dalai in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. The position is required to provide analytical service to research students. The work includes procurement of various analytical and process equipment, performing maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting, and method development for a variety of analytical equipment including instrument calibration and operation of associated software; training of graduate students and researchers on equipment operation, data acquisition and interpretation, laboratory techniques, and development of standard operating procedures (SOP) for the equipment.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of the highest level of laboratory safety standards. Including but not limited to:
  • Developing and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs);
  • Ensuring secure and safe storage of hazardous substances and facilitating proper waste disposal;
  • Ensuring the highest level of compliance with all environmental, health and safety regulatory requirements are met;
  • Participating in research group team meetings
  • Responsible for research support within the research team. Duties included but not limited to:
  • Supporting research through competent operation and maintenance of the instrumentations and existing research infrastructure;
  • Providing direct, specialized technical assistance to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other researchers on various projects including training of HQPs;
  • Contributing to the maintenance of research infrastructure including software upgrades;
  • Interacting with University Facilities Management to speed-up the installation of new research equipment, and maintenance of existing equipment;
  • Conducting analyses and/or assistance with the required analyses;
  • Providing monthly update on all analytical work conducted within the group; and
  • Providing support for routine attendance of the research team
Education: A diploma in Chemical Technology or a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, with directly related working experience will be considered.

Experience: A minimum of one to two years’ experience working with analytical instruments and specialized equipment and facilities related to chemical laboratories is required. These include but are not limited to: GC, HPLC, FTIR, GC-MS, TGA, TPD/TPR, ICP, CHNSO, XRD, BET, particle size analyzer, H2/CO chemisorption instrument, electronic data acquisition systems and software tools, transducers, probes, flow measuring devices, etc. A demonstrated commitment to safety protocols in past roles is essential. Experience in training students and researchers working in analytical laboratories is preferred.
