The Laboratory of Behavioural Neuroendocrinology is seeking a full-time, contract (1 year) Laboratory Manager. This position will report to the Senior Scientist and Head of the laboratory, and will encompass planning, coordinating, and overseeing the laboratory operations.

In collaboration with scientists and trainees, you will manage and oversee research experiments studying how hormones can affect the brain and behavior. Methods investigating cognition and memory will be used to further identify underlying mechanisms in neurogenesis and neuroplasticity. Advanced knowledge of behavioural neuroscience techniques, work with animal models, as well as tissue processing is required. You will be expected to assist in writing for external grant funding, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and to develop collaborative research projects across the various clinical and research programs within and outside the Centre.

The Laboratory Manager leads the development of problem solving and facilitative communications both intra and inter-departmentally. This includes creating opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations to advance the goals of the department and organization that includes fostering and building national and international relationships.

The Laboratory Manager will assist the Head of the laboratory in building and developing a productive scientific team fully engaged in translational research, including the training, mentoring and supervision of staff and students from a wide range of disciplines. The Laboratory Manager plays a key role in recruitment and directly supervises employees within the lab. You will be responsible for guiding project assignments, completing performance appraisals, assisting in training new students and laboratory technicians, purchasing and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies, ensuring compliance with quality assurance processes and laboratory safety guidelines including maintaining a chemical, biohazard, radioactivity and equipment inventory, and allocating laboratory personnel and resources to different projects

Key responsibilities include: (1) Management of a day to day activities of the lab including the facilitating the procurement needs (3) ensuring compliance with quality assurance processes and laboratory safety guidelines including maintaining a chemical, biohazard, radioactivity and equipment inventory, and allocating laboratory personnel and resources to different projects (3) Work collaboratively with the PI/Project Lead, Research Finance, and the management team to provide effective and timely oversight of the PI\xe2\x80\x99s finances; (4) Oversee the pre/post award requirements for the PI\xe2\x80\x99s projects, including RAAF submissions and grant activity set up and reports to granting agencies (5) Work with PI for annual budget forecasting and tracking. (6) Liaise with HR and other departments such as research legal at CAMH to ensure smooth operation of the research group.

Qualifications:
You possess a bachelors degree in Neuroscience (or a related discipline) and two (2) years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in a laboratory setting OR the equivalent education and experience. Experience in basic research and a mental health environment are necessary. Previous experience with animal models and immunohistochemistry techniques would be a definite asset. Previous administrative and management experience in a scientific setting is preferred.

The position requires strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills, critical ability, flexibility, and initiative. Candidates will possess the ability for self-directed learning/working, as well as collaboration and teamwork. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, coordinate and supervise varied complex scientific projects is required, project management and risk management training and experience would be a definite asset. Highly developed problem solving and negotiation skills are required to critically analyze, evaluate and resolve issues or problems related to research activities often involving diverse stakeholders. Previous experience in training and mentoring research staff would be advantageous.

Advanced knowledge and experience in quantitative research methodology is required. Experience with the application and testing of a range of different histochemical techniques in studying neurogenesis and neuroplasticity is preferred. This includes working and analyzing rodent brain tissue, from collection to processing. Demonstrated experience with neurogenesis markers such as Doublecortin, Ki67, sox2, etc., and familiarity with fluorescent and light microscopy and imaging techniques is required. Extensive knowledge of rodent models and behavioural assays is necessary. Expertise is advance animal procedures such as stereotaxic surgery, intracranial injections and cannula implantation is preferred.

Candidates will also have a highly developed ability to review scientific literature and to conduct comprehensive literature reviews. The position also requires demonstrated ability in manuscript preparation and research grant proposals, including the ability to explain complex issues in plain language both verbally and in writing.

Proficiency with computer programs including MS Office, Excel, Access and statistical software (Statistica preferred) is required.

Candidates require the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.

Please Note: This full-time, contract (1 year) position is NOT part of any bargaining unit.
