Work ArrangementsThis temporary full-time (35 hours per week) 10-months position is available starting August 26, 2024 until June 27, 2025. Regular hours of work are to be determined based on operational needs between 7:30 am - 9:30 pm from Monday to Friday. Shift days and times may change depending on the Department\'s need. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. The successful candidate must be able to work at either of the two campuses, in New Westminster and Coquitlam.

The RoleTo provide instructional and research support to students, faculty and staff, and train individuals on specialized equipment in the Sports Science Lab while developing both internal and community partnerships. Provides exceptional client-centred service on a consistent basis to all stakeholder groups.
Responsibilities1. Provides lab instruction and demonstration related to college sport science courses.a. provides orientation and instructional support and assistance of specialized lab equipment to students, faculty, staff and to the general public; demonstrates the correct use of lab equipment;b. provides ongoing instructional support to students on an individual basis, or in groupsincluding explanation of concepts, answering questions, demonstrating how to solve problems;c. prepares materials for use in the Sport Science Lab, subject to the curricula approval of the Sports Science faculty;d. manages access to equipment in the Sport Science Lab and ensures that the equipment is properly maintained and in good working order;e. maintain a working knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment;f. oversees and manages the daily operations of SPSC lab;g. with assistance from CEIT, installation and configuring of new software and hardware in the lab;h. production of audio-visual resources and web-page design to aid in lab instruction;i. maintains an accurate and current inventory of instructional equipment/supplies in lab.2. Evaluates student work and performance in relation to laboratory requirements.a. provides laboratory instruction and demonstration for Sport Science courses including supervision of open lab environments that involve sign-in, tutoring, student assistance and policy adherence;b. evaluates written work submitted by students as well as the performance of students in the lab in relation to laboratory requirements of SPSC courses;c. provides support to instructors through supervising, observing and assisting students or user groups in the lab;d. assists in lab marking and evaluation of students under the direct supervision of faculty;e. supervises students in the lab, ensuring compliance with safety procedures.3. Prepares materials for use in the lab, subject to the curricula approval of the Sport Science faculty.a. provides assistance to faculty with lab research. Supervises data entry and data collection by students as required in spreadsheets and/or databases;b. consults and collaborates with faculty in the development of lab manuals and lab activities;c. under the direction of SPSC faculty, researches new technology for in-class instructionand implements strategies to facilitate student learning;d. maintains currency in the field of Physical Education;e. promotes the Sports Science Lab to all college employees and users.4. Performs other related duties.a. schedules and tests internal and external clients on basic fitness tests;b. gather specifications for future lab purchases including the preparation of requisitions with SPSC Chair and purchasing assistance;c. performs routine clerical duties as required including photocopying, mail-outs, post notices, and maintenance of bulletin boards;d. advises students on Sport Science courses and pre-requisites;e. arranges for printing of materials for use in Sport Science Lab;f. occasionally conducts class evaluations of faculty;g. assists with lab-based events, orientations, career fairs and demonstrations.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

  • A Degree in Sport Science or equivalent from a recognized post secondary educational institution and one or two years of lab experience in a sport or activity based area.
  • In-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of fitness assessment and prescription.
  • Good working knowledge of course content, operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus, and modern techniques pertaining to the instruction of science courses.
  • Some knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), html programming as well as common sport, fitness, analytical software/databases.
  • Good working knowledge of the English language (written and verbal).
  • A demonstrated ability to:
  • instruct students and public clients professionally and effectively.
  • communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing, and over the telephone with students, faculty, administrators, staff and the public.
  • work in a team environment as well as work independently with minimum direct supervision to establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
  • follow and adhere to College and Department policies and procedures and maintain confidential records.
  • take initiative, organize, schedule and prioritize.
  • supervise student assistants.
