Work ArrangementsThis regular full-time (35 hours per week) position is available starting September 3, 2024. Regular hours of work are Mondays to Fridays, 8:30 am - 6:30 pm. Shift days and times may change depending on the Department\'s need. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. The position is located at the Coquitlam campus; however, successful candidate must be available for occasional work at the New Westminster campus.

The RoleTo provide instruction, evaluation and supervision of students in mathematics tutorials, including preparation of materials, subject to the curricula approval of the Mathematics faculty. To response to student inquiries in an open lab setting while overseeing the Mathematics Lab and associated instructional supplies. Provides exceptional client-centred service on a consistent basis to all stakeholder groups.
Responsibilities1. Provides instructional support and assistance to students and faculty to facilitate learning outcomes in Mathematics.a. provides ongoing instructional support on an individual basis or in groups for students in all Douglas College Mathematics courses - including explaining concepts, answering questions, demonstrating how to solve problems, and providing encouragement;b. advises students on math courses and prerequisites;c. organizes, conducts and presents at workshops for students when needed in addition to regularly scheduled tutorials, e.g., graphing calculator use, course review sessions, etc.;d. evaluates and makes recommendations to Mathematics faculty on the appropriateness of Mathematics tutorial software;e. instructs students with respect to safety procedures;f. supervises students in the laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety procedures.2. Coordinates Math Lab activities to meet the requirements of course objectives as established by curricular approval process.a. provides drop-in assistance to students in the Math Lab (learning centre) to develop further understanding of and/or overcome difficulties with Mathematics material, for all courses offered by the department including guided-study courses;b. makes recommendations with respect to ongoing curricular activities in the Math Lab and proposes new activities;c. researches, designs, and implements innovative lab activities for student use;d. prepares materials for use in the Math Lab, such as posters and review material, information sheets, and mathematical models, subject to the curricula approval of the Mathematics faculty;e. prepares supplementary materials for use in special workshops such as Power Point presentations;f. creates, maintains, updates and manages student access to archives which include past math exams, current solution sets, textbooks and supplementary problem sets;g. manages students\' access to calculators, computers, and textbooks in the Math Lab and ensures that the equipment is in good working order.3. Provides tutorial instruction related to college mathematics courses.a. conducts the tutorial component of college math courses;b. demonstrates the correct use of graphing and mathematics computer software technology;c. develops and implements strategies to facilitate student learning;d. arranges for printing of materials for use in tutorials;e. provides additional assistance to students, outside of regularly scheduled tutorial times, in relation to course work;f. provides input on tutorial curriculum design and evaluation to faculty in the Mathematics department.4. Evaluates student work and performance in relation to tutorial requirements.a. evaluates quizzes and assignments submitted by students in relation to the tutorial requirements of Mathematics courses;b. assesses and assigns final tutorial grades;c. maintains records of Mathematics tutorial grades.5. Performs other related duties.a. maintains the Math Lab (space allocated for Math advisory services);b. develops and maintains a variety of statistics and generates statistical reports related to Math Lab and mathematics tutorial issues;c. informs new students about the Mathematics Lab facilities both in class and during orientation week;d. conducts class evaluations of faculty as required;e. invigilates math tests when required;f. participates as a discipline member in the revision of tutorial materials, and attends Mathematics department meetings;g. maintains currency with respect to mathematics and mathematics tutorial instruction;h. manages multiple student requests while dealing with other time-sensitive tasks.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

  • A Bachelor of Arts or Science in Mathematics or equivalent degree from a recognized post-secondary educational institution. Some Graduate level study in Mathematics or Education is preferred.
  • At least 4 months of experience teaching college-level mathematics to groups of students.
  • Working knowledge of current mathematics software and graphing technology.
  • Demonstrated experience speaking to groups and preparing written materials and explanatory solutions for mathematics labs.
  • Good working knowledge of the English language (written and verbal).
  • A demonstrated ability to:
  • maintain current knowledge in the field of post-secondary Mathematics education.
  • respond to student questions in a broad range of post-secondary Mathematics courses.
  • effectively convey mathematics problem solving techniques to post secondary students.
  • effectively adapt explanations to meet the needs of a variety of learners.
  • communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing, and over the telephone with students, faculty, administrators, staff and the public.
  • maintain good working relations with other employees.
  • work independently with a minimum direct supervision as well as establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
  • handle high demand of student inquiries while managing other time-sensitive tasks.
