About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular part-time Laboratory Assistant - Production to join our dynamic Distribution team in Winnipeg. The work of Laboratory Assistants is integral to Canadian Blood Services role as Canada’s Lifeline. In this role you will be responsible for receiving and production of blood components. The incumbent performs these duties in accordance with Canadian Blood Services’ Standard Operating Procedures, Centre Operating Procedures and manufacturer’s instructions. .
Key responsibilities include:


  • Performs and documents all activities required to produce and end label blood components.
  • Maintains blood components in proper storage conditions at all stages of processing.
  • Recognizes and reports insufficient laboratory stock inventory.
  • Documents and notifies Supervisor of any non-conformances.
  • Confirm shipping temperature on receipt into laboratory from mobile clinics.
  • Reviews reports to determine if units are suitable for production.
  • Receive donor units and perform a visual inspection and assesses the weight of the primary unit prior to processing.
  • Isolates, documents, and discards units that are unsuitable for processing.
  • Perform bacterial contamination testing of platelets.
  • Prepare plasma for shipment to the fractionation plant.
  • Prepare and maintain laboratory equipment for routine operation.
  • Participate in LEAN initiatives within the department.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Preparation of samples for Quality Control testing.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12- and one-year laboratory work experience or an equivalent combination. BSc or College Diploma would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in food processing, pharmaceutical or biologics manufacturing is a strong asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a good command of the English language.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships with departmental staff, management, and customers.
  • Ability to pay attention to details, follow instructions, document work and assume responsibility for own work.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, being able to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities within short timelines.
  • Manual dexterity and the ability to carry out repetitive tasks in a meticulous manner
  • Demonstrated commitment to working within a team environment, promoting pride and accomplishment in the delivery of a superior service.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers within a Windows operating system using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

Additional Information:

Must be able to work all shifts as assigned including stat holidays and weekends.
