Your Opportunity:




As a Laboratory Assistant I, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team of professionals who provide comprehensive pre-analytical laboratory services to pediatric patients in Southern Alberta. You will work in APL Outpatient lab, central receiving/processing area, Ambulatory clinics, Emergency Department, Inpatient units and Rotary Flames House. You are expected to work all shifts to support the range of service and operations while conveying and demonstrating APL mission, vision and values. The team works under the direction of the APL Clinical Supervisor to provide and perform various laboratory activities that contribute to the efficient and effective functioning of the department. ACH is designated as a Viral Hemorrhagic Fever care site in which you provide all laboratory services under strict adherence to safety precautions. You will require expert skills in phlebotomy, utilizing various techniques and equipment to obtain quality samples while demonstrating empathy and compassion with pediatric patients. You will be expected to interact collaboratively with clients, APL multidisciplinary teams and allied health professionals. You will require proficiency in communication, customer service, multi-tasking, sound judgement, problem solving, decision making, and the ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative is required. You would be expected to work under time constraints, within a fast-paced changing environment, have exceptional interpersonal skills, and adapt communication styles to meet the needs of our clients and team members. Description:



As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Competency in phlebotomy at least 6 months within the last year (may be required to pass phlebotomy skills challenge). Experience in pediatric venipuncture and skin puncture within the last 6 months. Proficiency in data entry and key boarding skills (may be required to pass data entry skills challenge). Experience in performing phlebotomy, data entry/specimen reception, specimen processing and handling, send out, Research/Clinical trials specimen collection and processing, OP lab. Trained in/experience in Commitment to Comfort procedures. Ability to identify learning needs, seek out learning opportunities and professional development courses to assist in achieving goals. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to maintain collaborative working relationships. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Training and experience in Epic within the last year. Proficiency in Microsoft office and Windows based programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a Calgary urban hospital Pre-Analytics dept within the last year. Ability to manage workflow in a high volume Pre-Analytical department. Experience interpreting workflow visuals and ability to respond to meet turnaround times. Strong problem-solving and organizational skills. Certifications: CSMLS, IATA, First Aid, CPR level C, TDG, WHMIS. Training or supporting documentation in customer service, personal leadership, and/or change management.
