Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Technologist II, Supervisor and/or Manager, this position is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to specimen processing, troubleshooting, and general support. Handles, stores, transports, and disposes of biological and other hazardous materials according to guidelines; records information as required. Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing more than 20 lbs is required for MLA duties. Verify and enter patient and specimen information into the Laboratory Information System. Perform limited testing procedures. Appropriately prioritizes the processing and testing of specimens. This position ensures accurate sample identification as required, ensures sample integrity and suitability as required and documents unusual occurrences, and notifies appropriate senior staff members. The MLA follows, and is aware of all safety precautions and practices including WHMIS, and participates in the maintenance of a safe working environment. MLA operates, maintains, and performs troubleshooting on a variety of small laboratory instruments and equipment. Takes appropriate action and ensures proper follow-up, as required. Maintains records as appropriate to their scope of work. Monitors department supply inventory and acts appropriately to maintain. Must be an organized, independent individual and a strong team player committed to providing quality patient care. Understands and maintains a working knowledge of laboratory standards and techniques and demonstrates excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and troubleshooting skills. You are respectful, approachable and reliable. Your communication and interpersonal skills enable you to deal courteously and tactfully with team members and other Alberta Precision Laboratory and Alberta Health Services Staff.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications: Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent. Additional Required Qualifications: Minimum one year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant within the last two years in a healthcare setting. Computer literacy and keyboarding skills are required. Performs other duties as required. Participates in the training, orientation and supporting students as required. Completes all required reading required and maintains competence through training and competency testing. Must have the ability to listen, comprehend and orally respond to or relay information, directions or questions in person, over the phone, or in writing in an accurate and clear concise manner. The successful candidate must be well organized, flexible and able to prioritize and work under pressure. Must possess the ability to promote positive working relationships. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of LIS, preparation of basic reagents, controls, buffers and solutions for analysis. Perform temperature checks, centrifuge/fumehood cleanup, sample aliquoting and organizing fridges/freezers. Hands-on knowledge of aliquoting, filtering and knowledge of maintaining small lab equipment such as analytical balances, pipettes, centrifuges, and pH meters. Knowledge of troubleshooting printers and photocopiers. Experience in monitoring inventory of supplies and inventory management.
