Location: ALS Environmental, Halifax 13-100 Wright Avenue Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor

About the Position:

This position is responsible for performing simple and complex sample preparations and extractions, routine laboratory maintenance tasks and simple analyses.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Sample disposal, retrieve samples from storage, store samples in sample cooler
  • Operate lab instrument/equipment such as pipettes, shakers, centrifuges, pH meters etc;
  • Perform instrument/equipment calibration, maintenance and repair as required;
  • Perform instrument troubleshooting;
  • Perform sample preparation - filtration, screening, extraction and digestion;
  • Prepare all required reagents, standards, reference materials, etc;
  • Carry out all required data processing (i.e. calculations, data review, data entry, archival, etc.);
  • Carry out all required record-keeping & documentation;
  • General laboratory clean-up and maintenance, monitor controlled equipment;
  • Clean and maintain glassware and lab ware;
  • Assist in sample flow and archiving as well as data archiving;
  • Lead in the development and implementation of new procedures;
  • Lead in the training of junior laboratory assistants;
  • Perform all required quality control procedures;
  • Produce all tasks within specific turnaround times (TAT);
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Must be a careful and meticulous worker;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel);
  • Must be capable of working with minimal supervision;
  • Must be well organised, and able to work independently as well as part of a team;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to understand and carry out detailed instructions.
Required Qualifications
  • Completion of technical diploma or BSc degree in chemistry, biology or related field Diploma or equivalent;
  • Previous laboratory experience of at least one year.
Physical Demands
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
  • Ability to stand for a full shift;
  • You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
  • Must be able to distinguish colours.
  • Position may require overtime and weekend shifts.
