Your opportunity:

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP) occupies a unique position at the interface between basic biomedical science and clinical practice. We are an assembly of over 350 investigators, scientists, and clinicians, who educate and mentor trainees pursuing undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate medical studies, engaged in investigating disease mechanisms and patterns and translating new knowledge and discoveries into improved health outcomes for patients and populations.

As Laboratory Technician, your expertise in histopathology and immunohistochemical techniques will enable you to use a wide array of experimental protocols to support ongoing research on the eitology and pathogenesis of Nodding Syndrome. Your ability to provide general lab support and maintenance and your commitment to providing training and orientation to trainees on lab equipment and working procedures will help contribute to our key research.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Applying established standards when preparing routine samples for experiments, including the histological processing of tissue and brain extracts, staining and immunohistochemistry
  • Setting up labs and selecting, preparing, and sterilizing equipment and materials for routine laboratory experiments
  • Providing detailed explanations, orientation and demonstrating procedures to trainees on lab techniques, experimental protocols, and occupational safety precautions
  • Coordinating general routine maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment; troubleshooting issues with lab equipment and informing the appropriate contact when equipment needs to be repaired or replaced
  • Updating and maintaining standard operating procedures
  • Maintaining, logging, and storing materials and inventory, ensuring that samples and products are stored properly at the right temperature and condition to minimize any loss
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Science (B.Sc) or a related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience in histological and immunohistochemical techniques
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience in histopathology and immunohistochemistry techniques and procedures, including experience with histochemical techniques and stains
  • Experience with preparing and fractionating extracts from tissue homogenates using centrifugation, with subsequent electrophoresis and Western blotting
  • Experience using and maintaining laboratory equipment, including tissue processors, microtomes, cryostats, embedding machines and microscopes
  • Proven track record for coordinating day to day lab setup and maintenance
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational, analytical and record-keeping skills
  • Ability to work under pressure with scientific deadlines
  • Strong troubleshooting skills
  • High attention to detail
Assets (Nonessential):
  • Experience with immunohistochemical and histochemical techniques as applied to the central nervous system is preferred
