Your opportunity:

The Office of the Vice Dean, Research & Health Science Education oversees all researchundertaken for the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and coordinates with its counterparts at the affiliated hospital research institutes for clinical research. This includes grant proposal development, administering internal funding allocations, collecting and reporting on research productivity metrics, and managing core research facilities.

The CL3 Facility has expanded its physical operations and its level of service extensively since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The existing CL3 Facility has never been busier in its history with a high volume of COVID-19 studies and has taken over significant new space and infrastructure to deliver further support through the emerging Biobank and Viral Core platforms. This Lab Technician will support the Facility Manager and Scientific Director to deliver the expanded mandate of the CL3/Biobank/Viral Core facilities.

As the CL3 & Viral Core Lab Technician, you will support dozens of high-impact research projects operating within the Containment Level 3 Unit (CL3) translating into breakthroughs in understanding of infectious disease. You will ensure efficient and consistent operations of the in vitro CL3 facility including maintenance, inventory control, developing assays and materials, and participating in collaborative research. Relying on your sound scientific and technical skills and your strong communication skills, you will ensure operational excellence in a dynamic, high-compliance work environment amongst staff, students and faculty.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Constructing proof of concept experiments to test different elements of the process
  • Collecting experimental data, verifying results, preparing draft statistical reports and summaries and distributing findings
  • Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies according to the needs of the facility, and following procedural instructions when sterilizing material
  • Scheduling the use of lab equipment and resources
  • Troubleshooting issues with lab equipment and/or workstations and coordinating routine maintenance of lab equipment
  • Applying established standards when preparing lab equipment, for lab testing and for cleaning, sanitizing and sterilizing facilities
  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years of relevant laboratory experience in the area of infectious disease, virology, bacteriology, or equivalent biologicals
  • Experience conducting research and strictly adhering to SOPs in a CL3 environment
  • Demonstrated experience supporting labs, including setup of equipment and reagent preparation for various types of lab experiments, purchasing lab supplies and reagents, and maintaining operations of a research facility
  • Experience tracking and maintaining libraries of sensitive samples, biobanks and/or valuable biological samples
  • Experience serving as a resource and providing technical support, training, and troubleshooting to users
  • Experience working with and maintaining operations of lab equipment (biosafety cabinets, centrifuges, CO2 incubators, ULT freezers, general microscopy, qPCR)
  • Experience with utilizing respiratory protection (N95 fit test, PAPRs etc.) and performing work with aerosol transmitting human pathogens
  • Experience operating autoclaves and performing biological indicator testing for sterilization verification
  • Experience in collecting, analyzing and summarizing data for presentation
  • Experience with pre-clinical experiments, and animal research
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently, and take initiative to meet deadlines and ensure issues are addressed in a timely manner
  • Must work effectively in a team, have excellent time management skills, sound judgment, exemplary organizational skills, and a commitment to research
  • Strong knowledge of local and federal health and safety regulations for CL3 laboratory conditions, experience applying SOPs for lab safety compliance measures
